Conflict occurs naturally in every working environment. It arises in many different situations with many different people over a variety of
issues. Conflict is any situation where our desires and concerns differ from another person or group of people.
Unresolved differences or conflicts, which are not managed appropriately, can lead to:
- Relationships that are strained or break down
- Delay in getting things done
- Poor decision-making
- Anxiety and stress
- Lack of commitment
Handling conflict in a way that will achieve an appropriate outcome can be difficult. The way we as individuals handle conflict is a reflection of our beliefs and experiences. Our preferred style that we are most comfortable with may be appropriate in certain situations but is often inappropriate and can lead to the outcomes listed above.
The aim of this workshop is to enable participants to analyse different conflict situations and be able to be able to manage conflict in a number of different ways according what is appropriate.
Objectives
This workshop will enable participants to:
- Know their preferred style for handling conflict
- Recognise the style of others
- Be able to assess conflict situations
- Practice using different ways of handling conflict
Workshop Contents
- Review of individuals' conflict situations at work
- Identification of individuals' style of managing conflict using Thomas-Kilman conflict mode instrument
- Strengths and weaknesses of different styles of conflict management
- Individuals practice using different styles working in small groups
- Small group discussions on how individuals handle common conflict situations at work
- Action planning for handling difficult situations and resolving differences in the future
