ASSERTIVENESS
Duration: 1 day
"How to get what you want and improve personal effectiveness"
The way we behave depends on how we learned to respond and cope with situations as we grew up. Most of us will admit that on many occasions the way we respond and behave is not always as appropriate or as effective as it could be. Indeed we often fail to achieve what we would like to.
Aggression (attack), which is often perceived as an asset in many management cultures, will produce short term successes but at the expense of damaging relationships and generating further conflict. Submission (retreat) may protect us from immediate pain and stress in the short term but will result in diminishing confidence and self esteem, giving the impression that we are weak individuals of whom others will take advantage.
People who are effective and in control deal with others in an open and honest way, in a spirit of co-operation, and so improve their personal performance through assertive
behaviour.
