Ale has for centuries been brewed in England and is uniquely and distinctively as English
as our patchwork countryside. Over the years modern brewing techniques and mass
production methods have produced bland beers lacking the character of Real Ales. However, some of the larger brewers and a growing number of smaller breweries are still committed to making bitter the traditional way. This website celebrates the taste of Real Ales ~ especially those to be found in Shropshire

So
what is Real Ale ? Basically it's alive ! There are two sorts of beer - Real Ale & Keg Real Ales are usually barrelled just before the fermentation process has finished ~ allowing the beer to become 'Cask Conditioned'. The barrel must be allowed to settle for a day or so before the beer can be served Other beers, known as Keg, are brewed in the same way ~ but they are pasteurised to kill off any bacteria (and some of the taste). At the pub they are passed through a cooler to chill them ~ then injected with Carbon Dioxide to make them fizzy. The results can be unpleasant |
