The Albert

Banks's pub. Over the years the choice of real ales has been reduced - now with three beers served by hand-pull. Both the Bitter and the Original were well kept and tasty and at a good temperature. New owners in 2005, so a friendly welcome is assured. Planned changes include retiring the jukebox and updating the bar area. And eventually pub food will make a return. Pool table. Lounge room as well. Handy for both the train and bus stations. Situated on Smithfield Road. Tel - 01743 358198. Visited Feb 2008

Until the flood defence scheme was built this was an often flooded pub near the Welsh Bridge on Frankwell Quay – it used to have the flood levels marked by the door. Low ceilings and a refreshing pint of Black Sheep, together with the omnipresent Tetley Bitter. Food is served at lunchtimes and there is an outside drinking area at the back. Nautical bits and bobs.
