The Vaults

Freehouse. Built in 1827. Formerly Brady's Irish Bar, and before that it was called the Castle Vaults. Now the collection of pots and pans has disappeared and so has the menu. However, the good news is real ale is back - and well kept it is too. The Deuchars didn't have much head but it was very tasty. Accommodation. Situated on Castle Gates. Tel - 01743 358807. Visited Feb 2005
Courage Best Bitter
Deuchars IPA
Fullers London Pride

Wheatsheaf

Situated on High Street at the corner with Milk Street in the town centre. Good selection of beers, all well kept. Friendly service, and now with tables outside in the summer months, but the traffic noise over the cobbles can be a bit loud. Marstons Old Empire very strong and delicious, and the Jennings beers were excellent. In fact - it was all good. Major renovation work completed in April 2003. Tel - 01743 353778. Visited Apr 2008

The Wheatsheaf

Freehouse. Friendly pub situated on Frankwell. so it's handy for the chippy just down the road. Pool table. Car park. Quiz night on Thursdays. Jukebox. Also handy for the Chinese takeaway. Gaining quite a good reputation for real ale.

White Horse
No longer any real ale. Large pub close to Lord Hill's Column. Giant screen TV and two pool tables in the bar. Separate lounge and bar. Car parks at the front and back. Food served. Tel - 01743 356339. Visited Jun 2007

Readers comments - No hand-pulled beer, just Ansells Mild on keg, Guinness and Tetley Smooth, along with various lagers and ciders. More like a restaurant with a bar than a pub, has lost all it's former charm (what little it did have) - May 2007

The Woody

Freehouse. Friendly and popular local with two rooms - bar and lounge. Nice old panelling in the lounge. Real fire. Darts and dominoes. Formerly called The Woodman. Six beers on the day of the visit including a superb Cleric's Cure Bitter. The Theakstons Mild really was mild and a bit tasteless, but perhaps that was because the bitter's were so tasty. Regular guest beers. Situated at the top of Coton Hill. Tel - 01743 351007. Visited Jan 1999, Oct 2003 and Feb 2005

Yates
Kegs 'r' us. Look elsewhere for decent beer.

Yorkshire House

Very old pub with beams and historic oak panelling. Old heavy metal tracks on the jukebox. Atmosphere is often smoky. The Green King IPA was not an hoppy but a little bit fizzy. Situated opposite the Church in St.Mary's Place. Tel - 01743 362622. Visited July 2005
