Popular and comfortable local
- a bit too busy at times. Major refit in 2005. Good selection of beers
and they are well kept. Also a good selection of reasonably priced food served. Car park.
Beer garden. New dining room overlooking the front. Situated at the end of Aston Street so it's very handy for the railway station.

Together with The Fox this remains the best choice in Wem for a decent
selection of good beer - May 2007 New landladies since March 2011. Pub is now back to its former glory, with home made food served daily, Sunday lunches served from 12 and it's best to make a reservation. Live music every weekend, Great pub and fantastic atmosphere - Oct 2011 |
Castle Hotel |
Now
a Joules Pub. Popular local
with nice wooden panelling. Friendly service and there were two Joule's

nights. Pool table. Situated right in the middle of Wem at 14 High Street.

Original Pale Ale Joules Blonde |
| Readers comments - Visited on a Friday night. It was busy, mainly youngsters who seemed to be attracted by the very loud music. The pub is now owned by Joules Brewery of Market Drayton, which was reflected in the two beers that were on. They were Joules Pale and Double Hop. They were well presented, and I’d rate them as 3.5 stars - Nov 2010 |

comments - I use this as my local and it is in the process of being
re-decorated throughout. It no longer has a pool table or Mansfield
Bitter. Weekly guest ales and all the draught beers are well kept -
Jan 2009 Visited on a Friday night. It was still the popular back street local as described and was quite busy. Beer range was Bombardier, Theakston’s Best plus a guest. I rated my Bombardier at 3 stars - Nov 2010 |
Fox Inn |
Formerly a Burtonwood pub, and spruced up in 2004 - looking smart with a friendly welcome. It must have the tallest bar
in Shropshire, and the highest stools. Anyway, the beer is well kept and
tasty. There always
used to be two Shropshire ales on offer, but it's been a while since we've
cheked this. Collection of formula 1 pictures.
Car park. Beer garden at the back. Located at the west end of High Street. Visited

| Readers comments - Just for info, the bar was newly built but replaced to its
original height (circa 1956) hence the high stools!! Went to the Fox, it was warm and friendly and the beer was fine. Decor makes the place feel like a chain pub, but the nice lady working behind bar made me and my family feel very welcome. Locals were decent sorts. I'll be back! - Jul 2008 Visited on a Friday night. The pub is on the edge of Wem’s “circuit”, thus it is very much a busy local with a good mix of clientele. And it is now one of two free houses in the town. Chatty and knowledgeable landlord who confirmed that his range of 3 beers changed frequently. On the night, the three beers were from the Greene King stable. My Ruddles was a 3.5 star, and it was specially priced at £2 a pint - Nov 10 |
Hawkestone Arms |
Popular local. Music can be a bit loud. The Tetley's was well kept -
possibly the perfect pint of Tetley, but it's too ordinary to score more
than 3 stars. Darts and pool table. Wood burner. Nice old black and white
photo of the pub in the bar. Situated on the edge of town on New Street.
pool table. Tel - 01939 232927.

Old Post Office |
| Called the Old Post Office because this used to be Wem's Post Office before it moved inside the local supermarket. Now with 3 real ales - a lot of customers seem to be the younger generation drinking lager. Food served. There is an outside yard with tables at the back. Situated at 25 High Street. Tel - 01939 768098. Visited Nov 2010 |

comments - Under new ownership, this pub has been totally refurbished into a modern
comfortable pub with welcoming and friendly staff, will be serving food,
caters for functions of any kind and has a following of regulars who drink
the four real ales on offer - Nov 2010 Visited on a Friday night and enjoyed the experience. It was busy, with a mix of clientele. The pub is now a free house, which is shown by the range of 3 beers on. The very welcoming landlady informed us that Salopian Shropshire Gold is currently her house beer, with the other two being guests from local breweries. I went for my benchmark Stonehouse Station Bitter which I rated as 3 star - Nov 2010 Local ales on offer - Shropshire Gold from Shrewsbury, Rowton Bitter from Rowton village near to Ellerdine & Spitting Feathers Brewery, and real cloudy cider - Dec 2010 |
