The Pumkinseed
Lepomis gibbosus
Bass family
Centrarchidae

The native waters of this fish are in the north-eastern part of the U.S.A. The Pumpkinseed became widespread with the distribution of Carp fry, so that nowadays it is a numerous and unwelcome fish in many places. Its flat body is short, yet deep and speckled with dark flecks, which even reach the fins. The iris and flecks on the gill covers are red. It lives on small organisms and the spawn and fry of its own and other fishes. For a short time the male looks after its own offspring in its plate-shaped nest.

It is caught by float fishing, using a small hook on a line of 1 to 3 lb breaking strain with animal bait. A good water bailiff prevents its overbreeding.
