Press releases - RNI 1999

Location of the Radio Ship 'Mebo 3' (LV-18)

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the initial mooring of the radioship was be in the mouth of the River Stour, approximately midway between Harwich and Shotley. The actual position was:

51 degrees 57 minutes North, 1 degree 16 minutes East

RNI will commence transmissions at one minute past midnight (that is, first-thing Tuesday morning!) with system tests, followed by the Breakfast Show at 6 a.m. with Alan West.

After a few days the radioship will move to her moorings for the rest of the broadcast. The actual location (off Holland-On-Sea, Essex) will be announced here nearer the time.

Trips to see the 'Mebo 3', home of RNI in 1999

For the few days when RNI was located in the Stour channel, boat-trips to come on board were run as part of the normal foot-ferry operation between Harwich, Shotley and Felixstowe.

TIMETABLE

9:30 11:30 13:30 15:30 16:30

The fare for this rare opportunity to visit a genuine off-shore radio station was £7 - all profits go to the RNLI.

Tickets were available from the Harwich Museum Office which is located on Ha'penny Pier, in Harwich (opposite the Harwich Pier Hotel) - the ferry leaves Ha'penny Pier at the times given above.

Once on board you will be given an escorted trip around Light Vessel 18, including most of the radio station. Post cards are available together with specially stamped postmark of RNI 1999, for a small donation, with all profits going to the RNLI.

RNI will broadcast for 28 days, commencing on the 3rd of August. Tune to 190 metres (1575 kHz), medium wave to relive the exciting days of Radio Northsea International!

At 0001 hrs on August 3rd, test transmissions will commence until 0600 hrs when Alan West will relaunch RNI.

Many thanks to Colin Lamb and Graham Vine for much of the material contained on these pages.
