All meetings (unless otherwise stated) are held at Riverside Centre, Newport Quay at 7.30 p.m. on the second Friday of the month.

February 10th
Exploring the Seabed of Solent & Wight: Marine Archaeology & Aggregates.
Presentation by Rebecca Causer of HWTMA

Rebecca Causer is the Project Officer for Hampshire & Wight trust for Maritime Archaeology based in Southampton. Her presentation is a new one which will give us up to the minute news of the work of the Trust.

March 10th
The Post Office & Post Boxes
Talk by Arthur Reeder

Arthur Reeder has become something of a household word when it comes to post boxes, of which he is an avid collector. He plans to bring along to the talk some of his collection of IW post boxes. He welcomes questions.

April 7th (not 14th as it is Good Friday)
Sheathing: the Underwater Protection of Wooden Vessels.
Slide talk by Cliff Dredge

Cliff Dredge worked for many years in the graving docks of Portsmouth Dockyard and is well acquainted with wooden ships and the history of their protection.

May 12th
Visit to Air Frame Assemblies, Sandown Airport.

Meet at Sandown Airport Car Park at 7.30pm
It is vital to book with the Secretary as numbers are restricted to 25.
We are very fortunate to be invited to visit Air Frame Assemblies of Sandown Airport to see work in progress on three Spitfires which are being restored by the company. By the time of our visit there should be at least one recognisable fuselage nearing completion.

June 9th June
Visit to Bembridge Heritage Centre

Meet 7.30pm outside the Community Centre?
Entrance £1.50 each.
Bembridge Heritage Centre is located behind the Library. Parking is a bit restricted but there may be room near the church. Meet outside the Library at 7.30pm. The Centre has some interesting footage of the famous Pluto fuel pipeline, also one of the pumps used which has been restored.

July 14th
Visit to Quarr Abbey

Meet 7.00 p.m. PLEASE NOTE: 7 p.m.
Quarr Abbey car park.
Father David Mc Culloch has kindly suggested that he will take us on a tour of the old Abbey as well as the new buildings. As he has Compline at 8.30pm (to which any of our members are cordially invited) he has arranged to meet us at 7 p.m. instead of our usual time. This will allow him more time to talk to us.

August 11th         NO MEETING

September 8th
Canals their History & Renovation
Slide talk by John Sims of Southampton.

Jon Sims of the Hampshire Industrial Archaeology Society has agreed to give us a talk on Canals which will include many in Hampshire and beyond. Much work has been done recently on restoration and new uses have been found for what was once the arteries of England.

October 13th
That Sinking Feeling: The Loss of the Royal George at Spithead.
Talk by Roger Whitby- Smith

Roger Whitby- Smith is well known to many as an Island historian. He will be telling us about the horrific sinking of the Royal George in 1782 off Ryde. I’m sure that it will be a stimulating nd interesting talk .

November 10th
The Black Knight Research Rocket
Talk by Mr J. Scragg

Mr J Scragg who worked for many years on the Black Knight Research Rocket Project will be telling us more about this fascinating subject. He accompanied the rocket to Australia for the launching tests and has much information not generally known.

December 8th
The Island’s First Farmers
Slide talk by Joy Verrinder

Joy Verrinder is the Carisbrooke Castle Education Officer and organiser of the Young Archaeologists Club. As members will know, Joy is pioneering a project to grow an ancient strain of wheat using only Neolithic methods during next year.
