2007 PROGRAMME

Unless otherwise stated indoor meetings are held on the second Friday of the month during the winter period
at the Riverside Centre, Newport Harbour and commence at 7.30pm

Details of where to meet for field trips and visits, which usually start at 7.30pm, will be confirmed nearer the date.
Members and visitors join these at their own risk and on the understanding that they are appropriately dressed and will observed all safety rules and regulations applicable to the site.

AGM followed by a dialogue
So you think you know about Industrial Archaeology!

Expect a light-hearted but very informative time as our mainland visitors from the Hampshire Mill Group, John Silman and Tony Yoward, ‘argue and disagree’.  Be prepared to be drawn in and test your own knowledge with some of the artefacts they use as props. An event to make any AGM well worth sitting through!!

Power supplies on the Isle of Wight
A talk on the history of the generation and supply of electricity on the Island by Murray Jones who is the Npower engineer in charge of the gas turbine power station at Kingston. Spark may not fly but this will still be a very illuminating evening. There is a follow-up visit in July.

IW Railway - Past, Present and Future
An illustrated talk by Jim Loe who is a Director and the Commercial Manager of the IW Railway. The talk is guaranteed to get you really chuffed and to leave at the end wanting to find out even more about its unique history.  So, all being well, there will be a follow-up visit arranged for later in the year to Havenstreet.

An evening in Ventnor
Led by Fay Brown this visit gives the chance to explore some of the history and features of the town.  Wet or fine we meet at the Ventnor Heritage Centre in Spring Hill. The evening is designed to accommodate both those who now find Ventnor slopes rather daunting as well as the more energetic and fit.  Perhaps you may like to take the opportunity for an informal meal or drink with others before or after the visit.  The cost is £1. There is a carpark opposite the Heritage Centre.

Visit to Gas Turbine Station at Kingston
A visit not to be missed, so wet or fine meet by the gate to the Power Station at the end of Kingston Road which is off Minerva Road in East Cowes.  As this is working industrial site suitable footwear is essential and all safety requirements must be observed. There is ample parking.

A Day out at Amberley Museum
An easy trip by catamaran and train from Ryde as the Museum is situated alongside the station at Amberley. After the summer train schedules become available, details of the visit will be published in the Newsletter and on the Society’s Website.  The Amberley Museum provides a display of industrial history through its historic buildings, working exhibits, demonstrations of craft skills and much much more. See the Amberley Museum website  for further information. If you have not been for a few years you will be surprised just what there is now on site. Have you seen the electrical pavilion or the radio and tv collection. There is plenty to do even if it is wet.

St Mary’s Low Energy Hospital
A presentation and tour by John A’Court, Estates Manager-Engineering.  A chance to hear what has been learnt over the years from the project and to see behind the scenes and discover parts of the hospital you may never have known existed. Please remember that this meeting is at St Mary’s and the evening starts in the Conference Room at the Hospital.

More Curiosities of the Isle of Wight 
This is a chance to see more of the 35mm slides from the collection that Mr Marshall has accumulated over the years.  Rob is one of our IWIAS members who has a keen interest in local history and the Island’s industrial archaeology. Take this opportunity to see some of the more unusual things he has found and photographed.

The IA of the Magic Lantern with Slide Show Mr and Mrs Maine
return to tell us a little more about their hobby and collection. They will then present an evening of entertainment that we might have experienced the best part of a hundred Christmas’s ago.
Continuing the festive mood mince pies and coffee/tea will be served and a raffle held. Donations of prizes will be gratefully accepted on the night.
