Details of where to meet for field trips and visits, which usually start at 7.30pm, will be confirmed nearer the date. Members and visitors join these at their own risk and on the understanding that they are appropriately dressed and will observed all safety rules and regulations applicable to the site.

Many will have already heard and enjoyed Mr John Lea’s Haste Post Haste elsewhere. In this talk John will focus on our interests as an industrial archaeology group, say something about his research methods and the feedback he has received from now nearly 200 presentations of the original lecture. If you need a nap, have it during the AGM for you will be certainly wide-awake and on the edge of your seat during this 45 minute discourse.

Water Supplies - The Water Cycle
From the days when the Island was sparsely inhabited to the period when local private Water Companies flourished this talk outlines the development of the municipal water authority, to the IW Water Board, on to Southern Water and back to today’s private water company. A talk by Mr Fed Caws.

Going to the pictures was an important part of many lives for most of last century. Visits to the cinema feature in many memories of childhood, growing up and courting days. This talk by Bill White of Southampton is illustrated with slide of the many kinds of buildings that housed these dream palaces from the flea pits to the Granada Tooting. |

A full day outing with coach travel from Southampton to the Houses of Parliament. Early booking is recommended as there is a choice of tours on a first come first served basis and any spare places will be offered to other societies. Own travel arrangements to Southampton. A visit to Sandown Waste Water Treatment Plant - Mr Fred Caws.
We meet for this visit to the Waste Treatment Plant at the main gate into the works which is past the Fire Station in East Yar Road. There is ample parking. Please wear suitable footwear, no sandals or wellies, and no flowing clothing for it is dangerous as this is an operational site. Southern Water will provide any necessary safety gear. |

A visit to the Southern Vectis Garage - Nelson Street, Newport with Mr Marc Morgan Huws
Either meet in Church Litten by the side of the Lord Louis Library at 2pm for a gentle walk to the garage or if you prefer at 3pm in Reception, entrance in Nelson Road. Please wear sensible clothing and footwear. High visibility waistcoats will be issued for safety sake. Parking limited. Note this is an afternoon visit to an operational site.

A Day out at Chichester
After an easy journey by catamaran and train or by other means to Chichester and a 200 yard stroll from the station, Mr Alan Green, a local historian and the author of ‘The Chichester Canal’, will lead a gentle walk round the Canal Basin. This will be followed by a pub lunch or picnic and cruise on the canal to see the newly restored swing bridge and wild life. Details and booking forms will be available nearer the time in a later newsletter, at meetings and from the secretary. Booking recommended if you wish to join the canal cruise. |

Harbours and Piers of Ventnor
Mrs Fay Brown and Mr Graham Bennett of Ventnor Heritage will present the first talk in a series on the harbours and piers of the Isle of Wight. The story of the early attempts to provide Ventnor with harbour facilities is a fascinating one; the loss of the pleasure pier was a tragedy. A follow-up from the town walk of last year. A talk not to be missed.

Prof Angus Buchanan is not only well known as Professor Emeritus of the History of Technology, University of Bath but also as the current President of the Association for Industrial Archaeology (AIA) to which our IW Society is affiliated. Please not that this is a joint meeting organized by the IW Branch of the Historical Association and is being held on a Wednesday in the Parish Centre, Town Lane, Newport, but at our usual time of 7.30pm.

A Victorian Christmas on the Island
A glimpse of the Christmas Season enjoyed in the Island from 1840 to 1900, including the Royal Family and the ‘family’ in the House of Industry. A talk by one of our members, Mrs Johanna Jones.To continue the festive mood mince pies and coffee/tea will be served. A raffle will be held and donations of prizes will be gratefully accepted on the night.
