Newton's married a Mary Unsworth, 6.12.1856 at Manchester Cathedral.
Mary's parents were David Unsworth and Ellen Grundy who married 29.4.1821, Manchester. We are descended from John and Mary's son, John Thomas,b1865
Man. They lived in Harpurhey. John Thomas married Louisa Bland of Anston.

Comments: The furthest I have gone back I am afraid is only 1803 with the marriage of George Unsworth and Ann Prescott at St Marys Leigh. They had thirteen children with baptisms being in Lowton except my ancestor who for some reason was done at St Marys. George died in 1828 aged 59 years and his wife Ann remarried a George Cunliffe. Comments: I am interested to see that Dunsters of Tyldesley feature in your genealogy. My father's grandmother was born Mary Dunster (18 Dec 1842), baptised in Peel Chapel on 12 Mar 1843. She had two brothers, Nathan and Thomas Dunster. Oral history suggests that the family had some connection with Peel Hall, Little Hulton, but the nature of this link is unknown. Mary Dunster's parents were James Dunster (a farmer/butcher)and Esther (nee Tunstall) and I am trying to trace their dates and place of birth. Are any of their names known to you? If so I would be most interested to hear - and also more generally how the Dunsters related to Peel Hall.

My Great-Grandfather John is believed to have had 3 sisters, Beatrice Unsworth, Agnes Unsworth and Annie Unsworth and 2 brothers (names unknown and my grandmother cannot rememember). Beatrice, Agnes and Annie (and the 2 un-named brothers) all moved to Canada (1950/1960s) and were later joined by Grace. It is known that Annie married a man called Len (surname possibly Love) and it is also known that this portion of the family had strong ties to Cleveleys, Lancashire.

Further info has come to light that may be of interest.
My grandparents John and Jayne Unsworth were married at Centenary Chapel, Church Street, Orrell.
My Great grandfather Walter Unsworth was born in 1895 and married Alice Pye on 24.05.1920 and were also married at Centenary Chapel, Church Street, Orrell. He was 25yrs old when he married so easy to work out the year. Alice was born 14.05.1893 and was 27yrs old when she married Walter.
We also found out that John Pye and Elizabeth Ann Unsworth were witnesses at the marriage but we don't know who Elizabeth is.
Alice's father was a hairdresser and we have no other details about him.
His father James Unsworth was the landlord at The Black Horse Inn, Church Street, Orrell which unfortunately doesn't now exist after being converted into a house.

My granddad had a brother called Walter Unsworth who was a few years younger than him and he married Joan Smith. They had 2 children Julie (born around 1958) and Adrian (born around 1960).
My great granddad was called Walter Unsworth and all I know at the moment is that he tried to enlist for World War 1 and was turned away as he was too young. He then went to another enlisting place and managed to get into the army! Unfortunately he was killed on board his ship but was mentioned in Dispatches. He married Alice Pye and her father was called Jabez Pye. We do have some photos that were taken around 1935 showing the them together with both of their sons.

I think there was a connection to the village of Bowdon (just south of Manchester)at some point as that name has carried down a few generations too. On the reverse it says From the Studio, Unsworth, 51 Cross Lane, Earlestown. Copies may be had at any time.
Does anyone know when Unsworths were at 51 Cross Lane, or were they there for donkey's years? Hopefully it will be around the 1880s?
Stan tells me that Thomas Unsworth was born 1853/54 in Croft. In 1881 he was living with his widowed mother at the Millstone Inn on Mill Lane Newton both he and his mother recorded as Licensed Victuallers.
Margaret Kidea Domestic Servant b.Warrington. was resident at the same address.
By 1891 he and his mother are living at 51 Cross Lane and he is recorded as a photographer.

His mother was born about 1822 so presumably she had died in the interim.

My information is that Unsworth is one of the oldest recorded names in Britain, dating back to 980.
We all originated from the Rhine valley (Anglo Saxon)
The family seat was then Mogul Hall.
The Unsworths have quite a history in Liverpool.

As I am the only son, of an only son, of an only son, there are not many of us on my side of the family, however many years ago I managed to trace my ancestors back to the early 18 centuary when they were living in Sowerby bridge, West Yorkshire.
To try to remedy this single boy carrying the family name forward from generation to generation, I have had three childeren, however only one of them is a boy (Robert).

Comments: My family came to Canada in 1883 from Bolton. My great great Grandfather, Richard, was a cottom broker in Manchester. A relative of mine had a professional geneologist prepare an extensive familty tree back to the 1500-1600's. It, along with an extensive collection of materials is now housed in the Central Library in Hamilton, Ontario and a copy at the Mormon Library in Detroit.
This is a marelous site that I hope we will all contribute to it as a gift to our ancestors and desendents.

My ggrandmother was Sarah Jane UNSWORTH nee LATHAM (b. 1877) living at Smith's Lane Orrell with father Peter and mother Jane
nee BALDWIN in 1881.
Sarah Jane married Peter UNSWORTH on Aug 28th 1897 at the parish church in Pemberton.
Peter was 6 and living with his parents Peter UNSWORTH (b. 1874)and Ellen nee FAIRHURST at 440 Ormskirk Road Pemberton in the 1881 census.
The rest of my ORRELL/PEMBERTON surnames are BALDWIN, ROBY, LAWRENCE/LAURANCE, PARKINSON, WINNARD and NEWMAN (also of
Prescot, London and Sussex)
Any help anyone can offer me would be received gratefully. If anyone wants any further info. on the few people mentioned so far and their descendents, I have
birth certs. marriage lines, death certs, photos etc. which I can scan and send copies of. Great site by the way.

Comments: Good to know I have so many relations, I hope I don't have to send them all a Birthday Card. I now live in Rhyl, North Wales coming from the town of Leigh, Lancashire.
My Mum was Mary Hunter a Cotton Mill Worker and my father was James Unsworth a Coal Miner who served in the 1st World War, sadly both now past away. I had an elder brother (James) who served in the 2nd World War & rose to the rank of
Sergeant, later being employed as a bus driver for the L. U. T. my elder sister was Margaret both of whom have passed away, My next elder sister Helen still lives in Leigh, I myself am retired having been in Coalmining for over 40 years, I Married Edna Prescott of Leigh the best thing I ever did, we have 2 sons my eldest son John is a Major in the British Army, My younger son started in coalmining but after being made redundant he is now employed at a local firm in North Wales. Well its good to know there are so many of us about and I'm looking forward to browsing through the information contained in the Unsworth History.

Comments: My grandparents, Sam and Georgina Unsworth, came to Whitetail Montana from Portal North Dakota with the Soo Line railroad.
Grandpa was an engineer and Granma raised chickens. Granma has lots of relatives in Alberta.
I have been researching the Unsworth Legend of Lancashire. I think the date may have been the early 15th century, based on the reference to the petronel. Comments: It was amazing stumbling across your site. I was on the
google.com site doing research for my job and decided to type in my own name - and came up with links to your site.
I know only a little of my family history. My dad's name is Robert Edwin, and his parents, Joseph and Sarah (Sheffield?) Unsworth, emigrated to the US in 1913. I know my dad had a few uncles on his father's side, and I think all of them emigrated to the US too. I know the family came from Lancashire and lived at some stage, my dad
believes, in Cockermouth (but that may have been where his mother lived).

I am a direct descendant of Thomas Unsworth of Maghull, whose younger son Richard fell out with the family in what amounts basically to an argument about religion and inheritance! I have loads of information about this line, and will let you have it in due course (and anyone who is interested - [please e-mail me). This side of the family lived in Liverpool until early this (20th) century. I have a copy of the newspaper article about the Unsworth table (see your article Legend) which was sold to an American in 1913 for 1,000 guineas, if anyone is interested. I can provide quite a lot of Unsworth information, - but I also need it, having lost track of the birth of my great grandfather John Taylor Unsworth... any information would be welcomed!

Comments: My gggrandfather was Joseph Unsworth born Bedford, Lancashire c1805, son of James and Martha (nee Dennet) the family appear to have worked in the silk weaving industry.
Joseph came south working as a navvy on the construction of the London Southampton railway. He met and married Hannah Rogers at Compton, Hampshire, they lived in the Winchester area (Compton and Shawford) for the rest of their lives.
Joseph remained employed by the railway company until his death, he was killed at the age of 76, while working on the construction of
Shawford railway station.
I am having difficulty finding information about Joseph's bothers and sisters, also his parents James and Martha.
Most of the Unsworths in the Winchester, Eastleigh, Southampton area of Hampshire are all descended from Joseph.

I am trying to track down information about my grandfather's side of the family. His name was Frederick Anthony Unsworth and was born about 1885 around Manchester/Bury/Unsworth (I think) England. He had one brother and sister. His mothers name was Grace Seddon Unsworth and his grandmother's name was Elizabeth Egerton. He went to Shrewsbury Grammar (prep?) school, then to St Johns College, and then graduated from Oxford University in law.
Story has it that his Aunt gave him a trip around the world for a graduation present. While he was in the U.S. he met my grandmother and fell in love. Returning to England, he told his parents that he was going to marry my grandmother. He told me that this upset them because she was not only a Colonist but she was also Catholic (they were Church of England). He said they told him that if he married her they would cut him off from the family. Well, he did, and they did, and I guess that's why there's no inheritance, I live in Texas, and I don't know my great grandfather's first name.
Anyway, if anyone has any info or links for me, any information would be greatly appreciated. I know I don't have much to contribute but as I discover things I will share them with you.

My mother, Brother and Sisters are in Texas. My Paternal Grandmother is in Rhode Island (Rita Unsworth). I would like to learn how to do the research
because my mothers side of the family has is supposed to have some colourful
characters in there. Edward Winslow - of Mayflower fame, and Lizzy Borden of
'Axe' fame could be a cousin. My maternal grandmother recalls being in the Borden house as a little girl. No one is sure of the relationship, but it should make things interesting.

Unsworth's (May 1,1869, Bolton, Lancashire, England) 16 children. I continue to operate the homestead Ranch from which our large wing of the clan has spread over North America.
Grandpa married Lillian Martha Carrington (Mar 25, 1874, Barnsley, Yorkshire, England). They came to Canada in 1895 with
Grandpa's brother Jim, a bachelor we think, who subsequently disappeared from the family history. We have a fairly complete history of our current history, but would love to make it more complete. A number of years back, Mom wrote back and forth with one Harry Molyneux-Seel, he shared extensive English names and dates, of which I still have.

emigrated to Canada in the late 1800s. They actually did this twice. They first landed in Nova Scotia and worked in the coal mines there. They later moved back to England then returned to Canada and settled in this area where they developed their own underground coal mines and did some farming. They were miners in England. Funny, some 60 years later I am also in the coal mining industry. I would love to get all the information from my Dad and give it to you as well as find out about yourself and others.
