Thomas A Unsworth
The mill houses were sold, often to their occupants. The mill itself was bought in 1941 by a Burlington businessman, T.A. Unsworth, who also owned the Whiting Co. and Tutalex (Vermont Division of Historic Preservation, 1981). He hoped to consolidate these two companies within the old cotton mill but before this happened America entered World War Two and ended his dream. At the time the mill was only being used for storage and the Federal Government decided that it could effectively be used in the war effort and turned it over to Bell Aircraft who used the mill to manufacture gun mounts and turrets for warplanes. While employment at the mill rose to 2,700 only 10% of the Lakeside community found jobs (Burlington City Directory 1944).
