Our cricket club takes place each week after school (3.00-5.00 pm) during the year. The School team plays in a range of different tournaments involving softball and hardball competitions. The team is open to Year 5 and 6 only, because of popular numbers. During season 1998 the team reached the Sussex Finals of the Seeboard Hardball competition which was played at the County Ground, Hove, and they also played at the County Grounds situated at Arundel Castle and Horsham CC. In the season 1999 the team reached three County Finals (runners-up twice) and a South East England Regional Final finishing in 3rd position overall out of eight competing schools from London, Surrey, Kent and Sussex. In 2001, our team reached the finals of the Arundel Castle Tournament. In total, these have been excellent achievements over the past few years, building up a fine reputation for cricket at Lindfield. A number of our pupils practise and play for local clubs too, including Lindfield CC, Scaynes Hill CC, Ardingly CC and Haywards Heath CC. During the year children from Years 4 to 6 inclusive will be invited to attend a series of coaching sessions organised by Sussex CCC (see details below) on a weekly basis at a cost of £1.50 per session. This scheme operates for both Years 5 and 6 during the Autumn Term, Years 4 and 6 in the Spring Term and Years 4 and 5 during the Summer Term. Contact Mr. White for further details about cricket at the School. Cricket Coaching AutumnTerm 2002 Friday Sussex CCC Coaching Scheme Groups: Year 5: 3.00 - 4.00 pm Year 6: 4.00 - 5.00 pm.

In season 2002/03 the team reached the final stages of the Mid-Sussex Tournament missing out on a third final in four years by one point. Chess club meets each Thursday from 3.00- 4.00 p.m during the Autumn and Spring terms. The club is open to all year groups. The club is supervised by Mrs. Sherwood and coaching organised by Mrs. Barraclough and Mrs Stabler. A chess team play against different schools within the Mid-Sussex region. One of ex-pupils, Stephanie Barraclough has taken part in National coaching sessions and represented Sussex at Junior levels. During season 2001 Stephanie became the overall English Girls' Champion for her age group (see report below). You can link to the Official Sussex Junior Chess Web site by selecting the logo below: Stephanie Becomes National Champion Stephanie Barraclough, a year 5 pupil, has become the English National Girls (under 10) champion for the year 2000. The tournament is held annually, and is organised by the British Women's Chess Association. This year it took place at the Lady Eleanor Holles school in Hampton, Surrey over the weekend of 12/13th February. 30 of the strongest girl players in the country took part. This was certainly not a tournament for beginners! Stephanie played seven games against the other girls in the joint under 10 and under 11 age group. As with many other sports, the players are 'seeded' before they start, so the best players should not meet each other until the final rounds. Chess tournaments are not knockout, and in each of the rounds players are matched against others on the same score. (1 for a win, ½ for a draw and 0 for a loss.) Each game was two hours long, with players being allowed one hour each to play their moves. On the first day, Stephanie played four games, drawing the first and winning the other three. Particularly pleasing was a win against last year's under 10 champion. Having finished the day on 3½ points out of 4 and in the lead, the following day was going to be even harder. Stephanie started Sunday's three games by losing to the eventual under 11 champion, but then won her final two games and ended up on 5½ points out of a maximum 7. This was not only was the highest score for an under 10 player, but was also level with the winner of the under 11 title. The prizes were presented by the 1997 British Chess Champion, Chris Ward. A photograph of this event is shown below. Well done Stephanie, a superb achievement!
Netball club meets every Tuesday for Year 6 after school during the Autumn and Spring Terms. Match day is a Tuesday. The club is organised by Mrs Homewood with help from a parent Mrs. Reason.
