What is a ZONE model

Home Up Gas Emissivity Bibliography

A ZONE model is constructed by dividing the furnace chamber into isothermal surface and gas zones. Interchange ('view') factors are calculated for every pair of zones, and thermal radiation heat balances are formulated and solved by numerical algorithms. The radiation equations can include terms for thermal convection and conduction and heat release due to combustion and inflow and outflow of combustion products. Key features are:

bullet

ability to handle complex geometries (shading)

bullet

handles non-grey gas behaviour

bullet

can simulate transient processes easily

bullet

takes rigorous account of absorption, emission and reflection of radiation at surfaces

ZONE modelling was develop as a technquie for solving complex radiation problems in enclosures. The development is largely due to the pioneering research at MIT by Professor Hoytt C. Hottel. The subject is covered in his excellent book.
