The Ross Operatic and Dramatic Society was founded right back in 1921; through the 1920s and 30s it performed Gilbert and Sullivan operas in the New Theatre in the High Street. The theatre burnt down in 1938, and performances took place in a variety of cinemas, schools, convents, hotels - in fact anywhere they could find - until, in 1983, the society opened the Phoenix Theatre in the converted fire station. Since then it has gone from strength to strength.
