Characters

Gary & TonyGary and Tony, Deborah and Dorothy, George and Anthea, Les and now Ken. All of these characters come together in perfect disharmony to provide the world with one of the most brilliant, well-written comedies in recent years. As with any TV programme, it is the characters that make it what it is - the plot is generally something to give the characters something to react to. Which they do. But there is something else that makes 'Men Behaving Badly' the classic comedy that it is. But what? Simon Nye (creator of 'MBB') probably summed it up best, in two quotes:

"I like a sitcom that - just occasionally - finds it necessary for a character to say 'foreskin' or 'shirt potatoes' or 'buttockfest.'"

"The word 'bush' so lifeless in a gardening programme becomes plump when used in its proper sense of pubic hair"

Anyway, on to the characters, which is actually why you clicked on the link to this page.

I'm not going to do every character individually, because they all interlink too much, so it's all going to come together with a few pictures....

GaryGary has been in the series right from the very first episode, as has Dorothy, his girlfriend since the beginning, meaning that they had been going out for eight years by the last series. Gary symbolises laddism, or rather blokism, with his best and only mate, Tony. Gary claims to have another friend, Clive, but as Dorothy reminds him, 'Clive isn't a friend, he's a worm.' As to why I said that Gary and Tony symbolise blokism rather than laddism, we must turn to the ideas of Paul Ross, when he said, 'Gary and Tony are blokes, not lads. Lads don't need each other. Blokes do.' DermotGary and Tony have lived together since the beginning of the second series, Dermot (Harry Enfield - left) leaving at the end of the first series. Also in the first series, Deborah, the 'top totty' upstairs moves in, and Dermot spends most of his life trying to seduce her, something that Tony is destined to also try, and eventually succeed in.

Obviously, Gary and Tony spend a great deal of time at the local pub - The Crown. Big fat disgusting Les (who boasts that he eats 75 packets of pork scratchings in a week, and took graffiti to new levels in the toilet, with 'West Ham is a poof') used to run the pub, until recently, when Ken took over, and 'converted' it to what it used to look like during the war. Unfortunately the photo he used was a black and white with Gary and Tony in the background!

Deborah and Dorothy are the unfortunate pair who have to put up with Gary and Tony. They do so considerably well, especially Dorothy, whose wonderful put downs occasionally bring Gary - and Tony - back down to earth: You're only romantic when you've got some crotchless knickers on....I'm condemned to a lifetime of perpetual misery by the God of Crap Boyfriends.' As for Deborah, living upstairs from Gary and Tony cannot be easy, especially when both men are trying desperately to pull her!

I know that this isn't the most comprehensive guide to MBB, but if you have any questions, I should be able to answer them, so just email me or sign my guestbook, and I'll do my best!
