'Cheltenhamshire' is the properish name for Gloucestershire, a beautiful county in the heart of the Cotswolds (he says, sounding like the tourist board). If you've been to the page about me, then you will have already seen the map that is currently on your left (probably still loading....oh, there it is now.), but you can have another look at it, just to see where I am.
I live in a little village called Toddington, about 10 miles from Cheltenham. Toddington has about 350 people in it, and the village's exciting features are: a school, a pub, a garden centre, a historic railway, a shop, a manor, a church, and a village hall. So, as you can imagine, it's pretty hard to find enough time to fit everything in.
THE SCHOOL
Toddington School was originally named 'Toddington School' over 100 years ago, and it has been teaching kids to speak proper and wright well ever since. Unfortunately, there is a chance that it may close, which would be a great shame, as it is a brilliant school, and a very important part of village life.
THE PUB
The Pheasant, as it's known (I think that's because of its name - The Pheasant), is our one and only pub (Click for a bigger picture). A very nice place to go and eat and/or drink, with lots of very friendly bar stewards working there.
THE GARDEN CENTRE
This is where I work, on Fridays and Sundays, so pop in, but I can't give you a discount - sorry! Apparently, it's got the widest selection of plants in the area, but I don't know how big that area is. It's next to....
THE HISTORIC RAILWAY
The Gloucestershire & Warwickshire Railway, so we get lots of trainspotters hanging around taking pictures ;-)
No visit to Toddington is complete without a trip on the train, so for more info, visit their website.
THE SHOP
It's a shop. It sells things. Do you need to know more?
TODDINGTON MANOR
Lot of history behind this one. One of the knights who killed Thomas a Beckett lived here, and the place is a really beautiful, huge manor (doh!) with magnificent grounds. No-one really knows who owns it, and we used to be freely allowed to walk around the grounds, but recently, someone is rumoured to have bought it, and we can no longer go in there now.
THE CHURCH
Well, every village has one. I don't go there all that much, but I think it's called St Andrews. I used to have a picture, but I've lost it. Sorry.
THE VILLAGE HALL
This is where, about two or three times a year, the whole village comes to life. About fifteen local musicians all get together and play general sixties and that sort of thing. It's a great laugh, and the most recent one saw people travelling from as far away as Oxford and Cardiff just for it!
That's about it on Toddington, but there is the rest of the area, which I won't go into detail about, but the Cotswolds is a must if you are ever in England. Visit this site for accommodation details. |
