The B-52’s (1979) - Review by Mark Colgan

Planet Claire – The first track on the album, and what a cracker! If you’ve never listened to the B-52’s before this one puts you right in at the deep end! It builds slowly, a Peter Gunn type guitar comes in and then blam!. You’re hit with Fred’s bizarre vocal style. The lyrics are typical B-52’s ‘Planet Claire has pink hair, all the tree’s are red, no one ever dies there, no one has a head’! Excellent! 9/10

52 Girls – This one features the girls vocals, basically just singing a bunch of girls names, with a little bit more thrown in for good measure. It is upbeat and bright sounding. A good fun, catchy tune. 8/10

Dance This Mess Around – A lot slower than 52 Girls, this one is a much mellower tune. Featuring Fred and I think, Cindy mainly, this song is also very good. More wacky lyrics ‘why don’t you dance with I’m not no limburger’. 8/10

Rock Lobster – The all time top party track! This track is well known. Catchy, upbeat and fun, good enough to make anyone smile. I love the guitar and Fred is excellent, more odd lyrics, but that’s the fun of the B-52’s! 9/10

Lava – A slower tune, brings you back to Earth after the fun of Rock Lobster, good combination of vocals from the girls and Fred, good guitar. A good track, but maybe not as catchy as some of the others. 7/10

There’s a Moon in the Sky – An odd song, I never quite got to grips with this one. It’s definitely fun, but why different planets would be on the Moon I have no idea, maybe I missed the point. Still good though. 6/10

Hero Worship – I love this song. It’s quite tough to listen to first time as the vocals are quite harsh, but once you listen again, you begin to appreciate it. It is a powerful performance and a recommended listen. 7/10

6060-842 – All about rest rooms and disconnected phone lines! A good performance from Fred and a fun song. 7/10

Downtown – A cover of the popular song, probably the weakest on the album, but that’s probably as it’s not a B-52’s song. Still worth a listen and it rounds off the album quite well. 6/10

Overall this album is an absolute classic, it was the B-52’s first album and definitely one of the best they have ever made. The recording quality always impresses me, especially for a album recorded in 1979, it sounds like it was recorded today on the latest digital equipment. Even if you aren’t a fan you really should give this one a listen. Overall rating 9/10

Mesopotamia (1982) – Review by Mark Colgan

Loveland – This album begins well, Loveland is a good track, sung in typical B-52’s style. Although it sounds unlike any previous B-52’s stuff, this is true for the whole album. The UK version of this album is different from the US version and at over 8 minutes this track is too long, the US version is around 5 minutes and is preferable. 7/10

Deep Sleep – This track is a little slow and I would say is not one of the better tracks on the album, certainly worth a listen but a little dull after a few plays. 4/10

Mesopotamia – The title track is fun, well performed and catchy. This is definitely one of the best tracks on the album. It is fun and puts you in a good mood. 8/10

Cake – This is an odd song, all about baking cakes! It’s very catchy and you can’t help but hum the bass line after a few listens. A great, fun song. The UK version differs from the US and I feel is slightly better. 8/10

Throw That Beat in the Garbage Can – This one features Fred, with his usual style of wackiness. Not my favorite track at all, but well produced. 5/10

Nip it in the Bud – This is the class track of the album, great vocals, excellent guitar, an absolute classic not to be missed. 9/10

David Byrne of Talking Heads produced this album and it has a very different sound to both the earlier and later B-52’s stuff. As it has only 6 tracks it is usually found at a cheaper than average price and is worth picking up just for Cake and Nip it in the Bud alone. Overall rating 7/10.

Whammy! (1983) - Review by Cate Campbell

Whammy! is a wonderful album, maybe their  best, I love Song For A Future Generation it is the best song on it, I think it's nice how all of them had a part in the song, and Work That Skirt is also very good too, I have listened to this album so many times and I never get tired of it.

Bouncing off the Satellites (1986) – Review by Mark Colgan

Summer of Love – A good start to the album, a good summery tune that gets you in a good mood. There are a couple different versions of this, my album version is remixed by Shep Pettibone. 8/10

Girl from Ipanema Goes to Greenland – The second track follows on nicely from the first, nice sounding, I like the guitar in this one. A quality song, although maybe not as powerful as some of their earlier efforts. 8/10

Housework – An odd little number, not really like anything else on the album. Nicely put together, but not the most memorable B-52’s song. Still good though. 6/10

Detour Thru Your Mind – A weird, trancy song. Bizarre lyrics and a good performance by Fred. I never quite got into this one, but it’s an interesting listen and well performed. 6/10

Wig – A party song! Upbeat and bright, although not particularly intellectual. It’s fun and cheers you up. Not surprisingly it’s all about wigs! 6/10

Theme for a Nude Beach – A nice little number, good vocals and nicely performed. A cheery song. 8/10

Ain’t It a Shame – Another good number, although not absolute top class, it is still very good. Nice vocal performance. Always a pleasure to listen to. 7/10

Juicy Jungle – Another Fred number, themed on saving the jungles from destruction. A good song about a serious subject. 7/10

Communicate – Probably the weakest song on the album, certainly not duff, but I feel it lacks that certain spark that makes the B-52’s material so consistently good. 5/10

She Brakes for Rainbows – The finale is a nice little song, nicely sung, it rounds the album off very well. 7/10

This album is often overlooked, and whilst certainly not sounding at all like the previous B-52’s material, as it is more synthesizer driven, it is a quality album, easy to listen too and well produced. Definitely one for the collection. Overall rating 7/10.

Cosmic Thing (1989) – Review by Mark Colgan

Cosmic Thing – The title track starts off the album in an up tempo manner. Fred is right there from the first note. A track that really gets your toes tapping. 8/10

Dry County – This track is a total contrast to Cosmic Thing, a much slower number, excellently performed and well produced. A good song. 7/10

Deadbeat Club – This follows on nicely from Dry County, again excellently performed by Fred and the girls. A good track overall. 7/10

Love Shack – Everybody knows this one, it’s always played at parties, in fact it’s probably one of the all time great party tracks. Played to death on the radio at the time, it put the B-52’s right back in the spotlight again. 9/10

Junebug – This track is totally different from the earlier tracks on the album, I love the guitar in this one. A great track. 8/10

Roam – This is a good song, it was a reasonable hit too, Excellently performed by the girls, one of my favorite tracks overall. 9/10

Bushfire – Another great song, I always look forward to this one when playing this album. Top quality all the way through. 9/10

Channel Z – It took me a long time to get into this track, originally I would skip over it, but after a number of listens over several years I now like it. Not their absolute best but still above average. 7/10

Topaz – This track is best described as ‘attractive’. It is excellently sung and the guitar is great. A quality track. 8/10

Follow Your Bliss – An instrumental to end the album, a couple of the B-52’s albums end this way. It is an excellent way to ‘wind-down’ and leaves you feeling like you’ve had a great listening experience. 8/10

This album is excellent, with all tracks being in the good to very good category. This one is definitely worth buying, after having this album for 12 years it is still fresh sounding. Overall rating 9/10.
