GN: Cancelled. A good turnout of cars, including a return to F1 racing for 343 Barry Heath. Heat 1 was for the white and yellow grades, with a dramatic start as a back straight melee caused 470 Rob Farrell to hit the fence before 111 Mike Williamson T-boned 101 David Waterhouse to clamber over him, Williamson’s front bumper wrecking Waterhouse’s aerofoil. 337 Dave Willis was forced over a turn 3 marker tyre to wheelie as the race was yellow flagged. 238 Richard Bryan set the pace on the restart ahead of 428 Richard Regan and 307 Tim Warwick. 73 Rob Cowley went too fast into turn 1 and collected 351 John Frost and 158 James Clement, and they all clattered into the turn 1 fence. 244 Mick Rogers and 198 Nigel Whalley traded hits, as 98 Les Spencer fenced 330 Graham Wagstaff. 238 496 Neil Holcroft headed the second heat before passed by 351 Frost. 198 Whalley gave chase before going ahead, as 4 Dan Johnson fenced 84 Tom Harris on turn 1. Johnson went on to whack 172 Micky Randell, sending him crashing into 463 James Morris, the latter hitting the fence, as 21 Mark Gilbank clattered 212 Danny Wainman into the home straight fence. A turn 4 tangle delayed 4 Johnson and 1 Andy Smith amongst others, with 97 Murray Harrison coming up the order. With three laps to run, 97
The track had been well watered for heat 3, making it a little slippery in the opening laps, which caught out initial leader 238 Bryan as he spun on turn 2. 337 Dave Willis took over, before being shoved wide by 338 Chris Brocksopp, as 192 Luke Dennis and 380 Steven Cayzer spun on turn 3. 515 Frankie Wainman Jnr and 390 Stuart Smith Jnr traded hits, as 53 John Lund felt 259 Paul Hines’ front bumper, Lund returning the hit into the pit bend sending Hines into the fence. 338 Brocksopp then tangled with 136 Jacklin on turn 4, 321 Ed Neachell taking over the lead, with 390 Smith moving into second and 515 Wainman third. 136 Jacklin hit the home straight fence, but despite being in a potentially dangerous position with his thumb down, no yellow flags were shown. 390 Smith overhauled 321 Neachell, with 515 Wainman on his tail, Smith then clipping a turn 1 marker tyre which came onto the track. This was pushed further round the bend by 380 Cayzer, as 390 Smith was slightly baulked on the last lap. Into the last bend, 515 Wainman launched at Smith and spun him round, Wainman getting caught up too, allowing 16 Matt Newson to sneak through on the inside to steal the win, with Smith and Wainman recovering to take third and fourth. By the time the consolation was run, the forecast rain had arrived, making for a sludgy race, with 238 The track was scraped before the Final to attempt to remove much of the ‘slurry’ on the racing lines but the the rain continued to fall. The race was devoid of three qualifiers, with 158 Clement coming in as a reserve. 307 Unfortunately, with the track in such a condition it was decided to cancel the National, although this may be run at the November meeting. Rebels – World Wide Rebellion (37 cars) Drivers Racing:
Results: World Wide Rebellion (36 cars): 361, 23, 41, 656, 1, 183, 67, 783, 470, 78, 8, 269, 395, 40, 999,170, 744, 589, 786, 215, nof. Heat 2 (22 cars): 656, 81, 23, 8, 783, 67, 2, 1, 170, 183. Final (24 cars): 23, 1, 25, 656, 35, 41, 30, 356, 176, 395. All qualifiers bar 216 Matt Hyde lined up for the World Wide Rebellion, and it turned into a superb race, with the battle for the lead right to the last bend. 2 Tony McCarthy and 361 Steve Shaw were on the front row, while behind, 23 Mark Rodgers and 25 Anthony Masters made up row 2. 2 McCarthy was rather keen to get away on the start, but got away with it, 361 Shaw putting in the bumper hard into the pit bend for the first time to shove McCarthy wide. 23 Rodgers moved into second, as 86 Chris Stearn and 381 Jason Cramphorn tangled to hit the home straight fence. 23 Rodgers bumpered 361 Shaw into turn 3, as the race was cautioned for Stearn and Cramphorn. 589 Brian Wood and 788 Stephen Mallinson tangled on the restart to hit the home straight fence, as 361 Shaw led from 23 Rodgers. Shaw started encountering backmarkers, and when trying to pass 40 Steve Featherstone on the outside of the town bend, 23 Rodgers took his chance and bumpered Featherstone, sending him wide into Shaw, and Rodgers took the lead. This left Shaw to battle with 2 McCarthy for second, with 23 Rodgers now a good few lengths ahead. 53 Graham Charlesworth joined the fight over second place, as 76 John Gavin hit the home straight armco. 361 Shaw spun 53 Charlesworth on turn 2, allowing 2 McCarthy to briefly take over second place, but 361 Shaw was soon back with him to retake second. The race was then halted once again with loose wheels on both turn 2 and the home straight. 23 Rodgers’ advantage was lost, and he now had 361 Shaw right behind for the restart. 2 McCarthy soon pulled onto the infield with mechanical problems, before 21 James Spittle ground to a halt on the home straight, where 81 Lyndon Rushby and 555 James Price crashed hard into him causing another stoppage. All drivers emerged unscathed, with 361 Shaw’s car getting rather smoky as he waited for the race to restart. When the race got going again, Shaw challenged Rodgers for the lead a few times, Rodgers managing to keep him at bay, before Shaw dished out a harder hit into the pit bend, and they went round the turn side by side. Shaw emerged in the lead, with Rodgers launching at Shaw into the last bend to half spin him. They both got going again, with Shaw just outdragging Rodgers to the line to take the title, Rodgers then T-boning Shaw on the pit bend after the chequered. Rodgers was rather annoyed after the race had ended, and it transpired he thought there was still another lap to run. It had started to rain for heat 2, with 170 Craig Thompson leading the opening laps, before he spun on turn 3. 656 Adam Joyce took over the lead, as 2 McCarthy spun on turn 2, before recovering to tangle with 783 Stephen Thatcher down the home straight, Thatcher wrecking his front wheel. 656 Joyce kept going on the slippery track to claim the win. The Final was run over a reduced number of laps due to the heavy downpour and the track now extremely wet, with 23 Rodgers taking the lead from 1 Keith Murphy. 2 McCarthy spun when lying in third, as 656 Joyce also spun on turn 1. 67 Andy Passey spun on the back straight, nearly taking out 23 Rodgers as he rejoined. 215 Ian Trevarthen collected the fence hard at the end of the home straight, before 25 Masters clashed with 786 John Hoole on the home straight. 23 Rodgers maintained his lead to the line for victory. The smartest car award went the way of 588 Anthony Bland’s Super Minx. Heat 1 was soon halted after 731 Shaun Dyer was spun and rolled on the home straight, but not before 323 Riddell’s NSU was wrecked on turn 2 after being hit hard by 220 Tom Pavitt to cause a small pile up. The restart saw 4 Johnny Easthope spinning to take a hit from 519 Scorse on the home straight, as 295 Graham Heywood took a naughty detour onto the infield to jack the parked up 05 Carlos Perez. 226 Youngson was spun and hit head-on by 841 Phil The Championship was next, with a massive 48 car grid forming. 917 John Millen set the early pace before being passed by 262 Barnard. 205 Ganter was jacked on the home straight, before 272 Gary Murrell steamed 528 Fogg hard into the back of 179 Nightingale to jack the latter’s bubble Oxford once again, as a pile up and jacking train formed on turn 4 as 648 Kyle Guyler was spun into the fence, and 179 Nightingale collected 920 Sparrow. 322 Paul Brown then jacked Nightingale, before 369 Graham Chapman piled into him. 226 Youngson, 509 Dolan, 118 Peter Waite, 452 Anthony Sleeman and 152 James Dillon all piled in behind, before a second jacking train formed on the outside with 69 John Cope piling into 262 Barnard, with 272 Murrell and 10 Forrester crashing in behind. 322 Brown stuffed 917 Millen into the pile up, as the first jacking train grew further with 237 Milhouse going in, before 762 David Wilson, 920 Sparrow, 528 Fogg and 124 Ian Sharratt all piled in, leaving 237 Milhouse with a severely snapped Trummy 1300. The race was halted, with just 11 cars left for the restart, 352 Mynott being spun by 369 Chapman as 262 Barnard took the title and his second win of the afternoon. The Final saw another large field of 45 cars assemble, with a number of early spins before a small pile up formed off turn 2, where 118 Waite was spun by 315 Trevor Ashworth before being T-boned and rolled by 384 John Golden for a stoppage. Another small pile up formed on the restart on turn 4, with 179 Nightingale spun, 509 Dolan, 687 Alex Humphreys and 368 Mark Annets piling in to form another jacking train. 58 Girling got tipped onto two wheels as he bounced off the infield banking, before 731 Dyer spun 528 Fogg on turn 1 to roll the latter over onto his side to bring out the red flags once again. 4 Easthope and 352 Mynott crashed out on turn 2 when the race got going again, before 731 Dyer hooked out 562 Darren Brophy to tip him up into turn 3. 73 Sims and 562 Brophy then spun together on turn 4, before 384 Golden jacked 352 Mynott, stuffing him into the spun 562 Brophy, Golden going on to take the flag. The Dash for Cash started with a turn 2 pile up, with 648 Guyler collecting 107 Richard Horwell. 315 Ashworth spun 262 Barnard, now out in Fogg’s Minx with the steward’s permission, rolling him over to bring about a stoppage. 666 Lucas led the restart, as second placed 118 Waite was taken out. 511 Innes and 311 Darren White met head-on on the centre, with 205 Ganter also crashing in as the DD started early. 118 Waite piled into 124 Sharratt on the infield before attacking 315 Ashworth, as 666 Lucas took the win. Top cars present were 88 Mark Burns’ VP4R, 185 Lenny Smith large Caddy Coupe de Ville, which won the rarest award, and 501 Kaye’s unusual DS420 Laundette, while the smartest car award went to 194 Des Marsh’s DS420 hearse. Heat 1 had a lively start with 184 Gary Burns spinning 517 Scott Weldon, and 185 Smith hitting 241 Liam Cracknell. 196 Ben Harrison spun on the back straight, where 152 James Dillon dished out a hefty T-bone to splinter A smaller field for the Championship race saw 194 Marsh jack 517 Weldon on the home straight, before 184 Burns cut across the infield to hit the parked up 241 Cracknell, the latter then taking a blitzing from 194 Marsh while still on the centre. 601 Usher again took up the running and went on to retain the Championship. 601 Usher managed to lose control of his MkX Jag as he lined up for the Final, resulting in him collecting the fence off turn 4 very hard. Unfortunately, we understand he broke a finger in the incident. Once the race got underway, 800 Tom Hannah soon led, as 184 Burns hooked out 303 Oliver on turn 3. 181 Jason Pole spun on turn 3, as Hannah went on to take the win. The DD started immediately, with 221 Garry Allsop attacking 213 Marc Watkins, Allsop then coming under fire from 213 Watkins and 21 Gavin Robinson on the infield, with Watkins dishing out a T-bone. 800 Hannah also ran hard into Allsop, as 104 Mick Siddalls chased 213 Watkins into turn 1, but instead decided to T-bone 196 Harrison. Rookyard then tried the same trick with 551 Jones on turn 4 and nearly rolled. 676 Steve Bateman gave chase to 762 Smith, with 763 Andy Bateman coming through the places in third. 205 Rookyard’s steering broke sending him into the turn 2 fence, as 762 Smith stayed ahead to take the win. 886 Brian Owen set the pace in heat 2, leaving 869 Walmsley and 676 Bateman to battle over second, with 762 Smith also joining in. 658 Stu Silman then rode over 763 Bateman’s front wheel at speed going into turn 1, Silman going hard into the fence to wreck his front bumper. 869 Walmsley got the better of 676 Bateman and then overhauled 886 Owen on the last lap to take the chequered.
