'Stock Car Racing is
Magic' Issue 1 is now available from spedeworth raceways and is a superb
pictorial looking back at the 'Cross In Hand Raceway' and with over 200 photos,
many never published before, will stir many memories of the excellent and sadly
missed track down in deepest East Sussex.
The pictorial has been created and published by Dean Cox and Dave Baldwin
(Graphics by Dave), and produced not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Spedeworth next year, but just as importantly, a tribute to the memory and life
through the lense of 'Fred Buss', one of spedeworths photographers of the late
60s up until his retirement around 1980.
A donation from every copy of 'Stock Car Racing is Magic' will go to Cancer
Research, and whilst published earlier than planned, more issues are designed
and ready for publication with issue 2 due out at easter next year, featuring
more classic photos from fred's collection covering Arlington, Wimbledon and
Spedeweekends from those memorable days.
Dean Cox and Dave Baldwin hope you will support and thoroughly enjoy this
fantastic trip down memory lane, the cost of each issue available at £2.50

121 new Clive Marchant Photographs!!!
Clive Marchant
takes brilliant photographs and has very kindly supplied me with a large number
of examples of his work. Clive isn't interested in selling photo's and indeed
doesn't have the time to deal with requests for prints etc. but is always
interested in being commissioned and really wants the maximum number of people
to be able to enjoy his artistic efforts. Every week or two I will be displaying
a different meeting as seen through Clive's lens. This week we have the Ipswich
meeting of 25th May 2009.

News from Incarace....
FIREWORK SPECTACULAR ROUNDS OUT SEASON
On 8th November the hills of Cannock Chase will shake to the sound of one of the
Midlands’ biggest firework displays this November as Hednesford Hills Raceway
rounds off its season in style with the annual Firework Spectacular.
The firework display at Hednesford is always a highlight of the season, with the
quarter mile raceway lit up by a truly spectacular sound and light show which
will wow anyone who witnesses it.
It’s not just the sound of fireworks that the Chase will reverberate to,
however, as the BriSCA F1 Stock Cars are back at their fastest UK venue. This is
the only chance to see these 600bhp leviathans at Hednesford this year, and the
rumble from their V8 engines will rival the fireworks for sound! Top drivers to
look out for include World Champion Andrew Smith (1), newly crowned National
Series champion Stuart Smith (390), Frankie Wainman Jnr (515) and possibly a
couple of visitors from the Netherlands.
The smaller but just as spectacular BriSCA F2 Stock Cars will also be in
attendance, and they have provided some great action on two occasions at
Hednesford this year. Some of the formula’s top talents should be present,
including former World Champion Mick Sworder (152) at BriSCA’s fastest venue.
The F2s will be fresh from their massive Central League Final at Birmingham
Wheels Raceway the night before, and this is sure to boost the entry as drivers
travel to the Midlands venues from all over the UK.
It’s not just the fireworks that will be going bang, as the Bangers round off
their season with the final of the Man of the Midlands Championship. The
qualifying races take place at Birmingham the night before, and the champion
will be decided on Sunday – already over 40 cars are booked in to compete in
this two-day crash spectacular.
If that’s not mad enough, the Reliant Robins are back once again. It may seem
hard to believe to some that these three-wheeled machines can actually race, but
they are nothing short of stunning as they speed around the quarter mile with
the intrepid drivers fighting for control. Who will roll over the most times?
Completing the absolutely packed line-up of action are the Ministox, who contest
their annual Jack Cardno Memorial Trophy. It’s the last meeting of the season
for these young racers, and three drivers can still win the points title, so
great racing is assured.
Hednesford Hills Raceway has been staging stock car and banger racing for over
40 years, and the banked asphalt quarter-mile oval is the fastest of its kind in
the UK. The track is situated just two miles from Cannock town centre – follow
the brown tourist signs from the A5.
Gates open at 10.30am, with action getting underway at 1.30pm. Admission is just
£13 for adults, £10 for concessions and £6 for children. But on this special
night, entry for the Fireworks and Final races is available from 5.30pm, and is
priced at just £6 for adults, £5 for concessions and £3 for children.
Trackside parking is available for £6 per car on a first come, first served
basis – please arrive early if you wish to view the racing from your car – and a
large free car park is provided outside the stadium.
The raceway features two covered grandstands and a variety of catering and sales
points, and is one of the best-equipped short oval venues in the UK. Bring the
whole family along for a day out to remember.
There is also action at Birmingham Wheels Raceway, in Bordesley Green, the
Saturday night night before (7th November) – featuring huge numbers of BriSCA
F2s in their Central League Championship, the small but fantastic Rebel Racers
in their last meeting of the season, and the qualifying races for the Bangers
Man of the Midlands Championship. Racing kicks off at 6.45pm.

is out now. Paul Huggett has a look at all the young guns that are
coming into the sport. Jim Turner brings us the news from an 'explosive' F2
World Final. There's a great feature on Chris Harvey and his 2L Hot Rod Corrado.
Very smart it is too. 'One of those days' has masses of pictures of race
incidents that the drivers would probably have preferred to forget! Chris and
David Whiting have an excellent double page article on the Saloon Stock Car
World Final weekend that took place at Kings Lynn. The BriSCA F1's are covered
in there own race action update feature. As ever the 'Short Track America' pages
have lots of amazing looking cars and I must admit I'd love to visit some of the
tracks like the Penn Cann Speedway that feature here. Don't forget that the
mag. has adverts from the major promotions so you can plan your trips. As always the mag. is an excellent read,

20/10/09 News from the
Adrian Blackwell team....
"Championship Third To Cap A Great Season"

Colin Caserley photo.
Staines Stock Car driver Adrian Blackwell claimed third place in the season-long
BriSCA F2 Whites & Yellows Championship at Northampton International Raceway on
Sunday, and with a third place in the meeting consolation race capped off his
best season to date at the Midlands venue.
Starting the championship finale race from pole position, as highest white grade
points scorer over the season, Blackwell took the early lead but a combined
attack from Luke Philips and Brett Townsend sent the Heathrow IT worker wide and
allowed the duo to pass on the inside. As the tyres warmed up on the cold
autumnal day Blackwell reeled the leading pair back in and a well-placed hit on
Townsend saw him through for second. Chevy Mills caught and passed Blackwell
with a couple of laps to go, and despite a last bend lunge making contact,
Blackwell was unable to unseat the yellow-top and came home third to claim the
final podium position.
The "Central League" semi-final, doubling as heat2, saw Blackwell gridded on the
outside of the third row. As the green flag dropped second row starter Mike
Green failed to get going and Blackwell had nowhere to go except push the
blue-top the entire length of the home straight. Once able to move by Blackwell
set about making up lost ground, but just two laps later the engine coughed and
died leaving him to coast to the safety of the centre green. Inspection in the
pits following the race revealed nothing more serious than a broken rotor arm,
which was soon fixed in readiness for the next race.
The consolation saw Blackwell take an early lead and build up a straight-length
advantage by the mid-point. Just a lap past half-way a caution flag for the
stranded, and severely bent, Keith Walding car saw Blackwell’s advantage wiped
out as the field was bunched up. A good restart allowed Blackwell to keep the
lead for a couple more laps, but Darren Clark in the quick Adam Rubery car and
superstar Nigel Green muscled their way by, demoting Blackwell to third at the
finish.
The meeting final saw Blackwell under attack twice in the opening stages, the
second time getting very side-ways in turn 4 and narrowly missing a spinning
car. Being forced out in to the rubber "marbles" around the outside of the turn,
and gathering up the car to avoid spinning himself, slowed Blackwell’s momentum
and dropped him down the field. The remainder of the race was relatively
uneventful and Blackwell came home in one piece with a finish outside the top
ten.

7/10/09 STOCK MARKET 09 –
NORTHAMPTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
SUNDAY 22nd NOVEMBER – START TIME 10a.m.
Plans are now underway for the annual Stock Market event taking place at NIR. We
are expecting a strong turnout this year for both buyers and sellers as people
are certainly trying to beat the credit crunch and pick up a bargain or two.
Why not start putting saleable items to one side ready to make a few pounds for
Christmas or simply more money to spend on racing! It is amazing what people
will buy, you may consider it useless but to a new racer it could be a worthy
purchase.
Last year we opened the pit gates later to reduce the amount of inter trader
selling and this worked very well giving buyers the opportunity to snap up the
bargains when the gates open to the public at 10a.m. on the dot.
This market is open to any formula, feel free to bring along your car and place
it up for sale where you will have genuine people looking to buy all in one
place.
If you are building a new racer over the winter, come along and visit trade
stands and pick up all your hardware so that you can keep busy in the garage
over the closed season, instead of waiting for parts to arrive in the post.
It is also an ideal opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for your racing
partners. With plenty of racewear stands in attendance plus traders selling all
types of merchandise, lots of excellent gifts to fill those stockings
There will be lots to see and do, and as always the NFR Two Seater FI’s will be
in attendance and for anyone who hasn’t taken part in the white knuckle
experience now is your chance – blow away the cobwebs with the NFR team!
The track will be available for anyone to test a car (any formula) simply sign
in at the pit office (cost £15 per driver).
Food outlets will be open during the day along with the bar.
We understand that people are on a budget so we have held Stand Prices for yet
another year. Sellers can click here for a list of prices, and the gate price is
still only £5 with children and OAP’s free. Alternatively if you have any
questions you can email StockMarket2009@aol.com or call 07855 442 667
Please note the date for this event is the 22nd November. Gates open to sellers
at 9.30a.m. for set up and 10a.m to buyers.
28/9/09 Congratulations to
the new Superstox World Champion. 60 Ben Marjoram took the title at Wimbledon
Stadium last night (27th September). He was followed across the line by
151 Nick Smith, 23 Matt Carberry, 391 Jonathan Fields, 51 Colin Aylward
and 36 Kevin Croxon. I understand that Jason Cooper may have suffered a stuck
throttle.

Thanks to the reader who
sent in this picture that shows just one of
the many crashes that marred the National Hot Rod meeting.
The National Hot
Rods were on at Ipswich this evening and it was an eventful event (for this read
there was quite a bit of contact!) Heats went to 500, 3 & 65. The final was cut
short but first across the line was 74 James O'Shea.
The F1 Final at Skegness this
evening went to 390 (Stuart Smith Jnr) followed home by 141 & 464.

World Final was run tonight at Kings Lynn and the first six across the line were

the World title has been retained by Andy Smith, well done to him.

The second issue of ‘Oval
Track Classic’ is
out. As soon as you open the pages of this issue you’ll be impressed by the
masses of colour and black & white pictures from yester year. 1972 was a crucial
year for the Hot Rods, read what happened that year and see the pictures of the
many and varied types of car that were running as Hot Rods. Be prepared to be
amazed by the number of spectators at the meetings. ‘Lost tracks and stadiums’
takes a look at Aghadowey. Graham Brown continues with the popular ‘collectors
corner’. The ‘Classic Modifieds’ are a ‘modern formula that utilises older body
shells, the cars look superb and there is an in depth look at the formula in
this issue. Handled correctly I’m sure that this is a formula we could all be
seeing a lot more. Over the next few issues follow the building of an Historic
Saloon Stock, you may be motivated to have a go yourself! Andrew Welch reminds
us of the late great Spence Morgan, a legend of the west country. Those of you
that have been going to Spedeworth meeting for as long as me will remember the
name Roger Fenning but did you know all about his musical exploits, read why he
was also a ‘guitar hero’. Once again this is just a flavour of the great article
in this issue. Whether you were there to see it all unfold those years ago and
it’s trip down memory lane or whether you missed it all first time around, you
will find this magazine absolutely fascinating. As I mentioned previously Oval
Track Classic is more like a book, with so much content more than a magazine but available at a
magazine price (cover price £3.80 or for a UK subscription price, for the four
quarterly issues, of £15.20)
5/8/09 The August edition of
Autograss Review
is out now. The next issue is due out
during 15th August.
Nasa issues immediate tyre rule changes that could save competitors money.
Details for two meetings at Belle Vue finalised. Bans for two drivers are under
appeal. The technical round-up makes fascinating reading for for anyone
interested in what's under the skin of the cars. What is the future of the
'mini' in Class 1? The Stock Hatch Nationals has a full report. A report from
Evesham covers the Stu Nicholls Memorial Meeting and the all Ireland meeting
from Carlow is another of the meetings covered. F600 gets a 'half term' report. For a cover price of £2.50 this has to be
brilliant value.

14/6/09 Great weather,
great racing, what more could you want. The meeting today at Aldershot had the
lot, the Superstox British Championship was won by 482 Jason Cooper on the last
bend of the last lap. 602 Dale Fewings had led the race and looked to be going
to hold on for the win but Jason Cooper, last years British Champ., didn't want
to have to change the sign writing and timed his hit to perfection. 116 John
Smith had a great meeting winning his two heats and coming third in the
championship, he looks certain to be a red grade next grading period. The
Championship was only open to the top 30 points scorers on the day, so the heats
were hard fought over and I felt that this greatly added to the excitement. Even
with a few people like Pip Williams, Steve Jackson (who I understand recently
had an engine problem) and Gary Sparkes missing, there was a brilliant quality
field of over 40 cars, this really shows the current strength of the superstox
formula. I can't wait to see 'em again.

29/12/08 Over Christmas I
obtained a copy of Richard Neil's latest book.
"Those were the days... Hot Rod & Stockcar Racing in Britain in the 1980's"
was not only a book that I couldn't put down but one that I'm sure is going to
appeal to a very wide range of readers. There's a huge number of brilliant
colour photo's that are accompanied by masses of interesting insights into the
sport in the 80's. If like me, you may have been there, and so much enjoy
reminiscing, or you may want to see why this period is looked back on as being
so great. For the casual reader there are a huge number of photo's from each
