Sunday 14th June 2009 - NMSC at Skegness Stadium - W&Y/Skegness Open(Finals)

Many thanks to Graham Campling for the report.

28 drivers racing today and we started off with 16 of them racing for the Whites & Yellows Championship. Points scored last determined each drivers position within their grade - #275 Karl Hawkins and #94 Luke Johnson claiming the front row of the grid. These two battled for the lead for the majority of the race with Luke taking a clear lead in the closing stages as they passed back-markers. #55 Steph Booth and #33 Simon Roper contested third place until, in the closing laps, Steph clipped the car of #39 Lucy Clark, stranded on turn four, and ended up on the infield marker tyres.

The points from today’s 2/3-split heats, together with last night’s points made up the Skegness Open final grid, with superstar-grade drivers #313 Karl Emmett and #1 Jack Aldridge taking the front row slots of the close-order grid. With a few early lead changes, #91 Josh Smith eventually opened a gap and eased clear as Jack and Karl battled with #304 Jamie Conway, #77 Tom Hertzog and #66 Bob Griffin. In the closing laps, Karl edged ahead of Jack and started to catch Josh but hadn’t made enough ground for his last bend hit on Josh’s back bumper to prove successful.

29 drivers raced tonight in 2/3-split heats and an all-in final. Although the superstar-grade drivers took the race wins, they really had their work cut out catching the white and yellow grade drivers who achieved some very respectable results.

As well as grading points, the drivers have been earning qualifying points for tomorrows championship races – the Whites & Yellows Championship starts Sunday’s meeting and the Skegness Open Championship rounds off the weekend’s racing with close-order grid final, highest points scorer on pole.

More results to follow Sunday night.

Warneton 24th May

Many thanks to the good folk at KAM racing for the report.

Sunday 24th May saw the thundering stock cars of the European Late Model Series return to Warneton International Speedway for the 10th, 11th and 12th rounds of the season. Blistering heat meant a hard day’s racing at the Belgian track, with three different winners from the three races, including the first win for a former-ASCAR machine.

Revolution Racing’s two cars once again lined-up at the front of the grid and would have been joined by Keith Whalley’s ASCAR Pontiac Grand Prix, but fuel regulator issues prevented him from taking the start. They led in the early stages before Lee Maddox in the #99 dropped back with a power steering failure. Behind, their main challenger was Bruce Andrews in the #17, followed by Frederic Bernier in the #4 Ford Taurus. At the rear of the field Gary Ellis, Xavier Vandermeersch and Jean Vasseur were making their way through the traffic and catching the lead pack. In the midfield David Brooks was tipped into a spin in Turn 2, but didn’t sustain any damage. Andrews took the win from Ellis and Vasseur, with Tony Hurdle best of the rest in fourth.

In the second race, Maddox and Hurdle ran side–by-side during the opening laps before the #98 took the advantage. They were slowly being caught by Bernier and Bertrand Zore in the #71, and once again Vasseur, Vandermeersch and Ellis carved through the pack. Winston Graham was suffering a torrid weekend in the #11, which came to an end in a cloud of smoke whilst entering Turn 3. This didn’t bring out the caution, but a few laps later the #19 collided with Jos Jansen in Turn 2, sending them both into a spin and bringing out the yellow flags. With a one lap dash to the chequered flag, Zore took the advantage round the outside into Turn One, but Hurdle held his nerve and got on the power early enough to beat the #71 car to Turn Three, staying ahead through the final turns to take his, and an ASCAR’s first win in the series.

At 60 laps, the final would be a test of endurance as the heat showed no signs of cooling down. Bruce Andrews was lucky to make the start after a brush with the wall on his way to the grid, and Race Three also saw Keith Whalley’s #88 finally make it to the green flag after fixing its earlier problems. Now sporting the #13 and hoping for a change of luck, Kelvin Hassell pulled-out a good lead at the start of the race, with Whalley’s #88 showing excellent pace on his first outing. Maddox was mixing with the increasingly quick midfield runners, but elsewhere Ellis’ #95 Chevrolet was pouring smoke from his engine and came to rest near the pit lane exit as the yellow came out. At the same time, Xavier Vandermeersch’s Dodge Intrepid was on fire at the rear end and he came into the pit lane to extinguish it.

At the restart, Hassell launched into the lead with Vasseur close behind, but the crowds were mesmerised watching Vandermeersch make his way through from the back of the field. By the time the caution flags waved for David Brooks hitting the wall in Turn 2, he was up to third. With just under half the race to go, new leader Jean Vasseur made his escape at the restart, as Hassell and Vandermeersch battled for second position. The Belgian eventually got past the Englishman, only to lose time with a half-spin in Turn Two and drop back to third once more. The yellow flags would fly once again for an incident involving Lee Maddox and Jos Jansen, the two of them colliding in Turn Four.

Vasseur held his nerve to take his third win of the season, with the #19 following behind him. Wim Moonen narrowly beat Hassell to the final podium spot in a photo finish, whilst behind them Bruce Andrews did well to bring his car home in fifth.

The European Late Model Series is next in action on 27th June as the championship makes its’ first trip across the channel to race at Lydden in Kent, but the action will be as frantic off-track as it will on it, as the teams will have to pack their gear and ship the cars back to Belgium to race at Warneton the very next day.

The European Late Model Series is showing on Motors TV, for full listings visit the media page at www.latemodel.eu

Car Crunching action at Angmering Raceway

It was Hollywood-style car action all the way at Angmering raceway on Bank Holiday Monday May 25th when 10 drivers lined up to attempt clear a line of wrecked cars in the annual car jump.

As car after car fell from the sky onto the mangled wrecks on the ground, it fell to Glen ‘Gonzo’ Beavis to power his car over the ramp and into the wide blue yonder, sailing a good ten feet over the line of cars, before connecting with terra firma with an almighty crash. The crowd held its breath as the driver appeared to be stunned by the impact, but burst into applause as he climbed (somewhat shakily) from his wrecked car to receive his trophy.

The car crushing was not over; however, as an ex-Spirit fm van was soon hurtling up the ramp. Bets had been on all day as to just how far the huge van would make it, with most settling on one of two cars. In the event, the van almost made it, crashing to earth on the final car and turning it into a metal pancake.
There was more breathtaking action in the final event of the day, the last-car-moving demolition derby. Incredibly, Karl Annents had salvaged what was the left of the ramp jump winning car and with the original driver not feeling quite up to more metal bashing antics on the day, took to the track for another chance for glory.
After taking some severe batterings on the back straight, Annents was indeed the last car moving and to add to the Hollywood style action of the day the as the car exploded in flames just as the chequered flag was waved. Annents climbed unhurt from the car as the crowd roared their approval to a show stopping end to a truly action-packed day of racing.
Elsewhere on the racing card, there were wins in the finals for 4, Tom Pedwell in the Junior Prods, 28 Craig Cooper in the Junior Rods, 306 Jack Morgan in the 1600 Front Wheel Drives, 936 Mike Schutt in the Hot Rods and 36 Ant Donavon in the Rear Wheel Drive Saloon Rods.
Nostalgia fans were treated to some excellent racing from the Classic Stock Cars with the storming red MG Magnette of 356, Steven Hillier taking the final win.
There will be another day of full racing action at Angmering on June 14th, with a full range of non-contact and contact formulas taking to the famous banked circuit.
Angmering is located just off the A280, between Worthing and Angmering. The gates open at 8am, with racing commencing at 11.30am. Adult admission is £10 kids, 10-14, £5, with kids under ten free. Senior Citizens, disabled and Students (with valid student cards) can also enjoy a days racing for just £5.

If you ever make a note of any results I will be very pleased to make use of them on this page and bring them to the readers.
