Taunton 22 June 2008

Many thanks to Alan Parkinson for his report.

The third staging of the Bangers “one sunny day” event at Smeatharpe Stadium, Taunton was indeed sunny, with a good showing of cars. Support came in the shape of BriSCA F2 Stock cars, Stock Rods, and Ministox.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Despite one or two absentees amongst the regular group of drivers, there were some more occasional racers on the grid, as the F2s produced a far better show than their previous two slightly mediocre dates at Smeatharpe.
Matt Jeffery (838) and Andy Sobey (550) forged their way ahead into first and second in heat one, building up a significant gap as behind them a tremendous battle ensued between Matt Stoneman (127), Eddie Darby (877) and Kane Moore (832). With Jeffery out at the front Neil Hooper (676) was the first of the star grade to show, and with the lap boards out Jeffery was still clear. Darby lunged at Stoneman as their battle continued, whilst Sobey, Ross Rowe (105) and James Rogers (544) clashed on the back straight to bring out the yellow flags. The unfortunate Jeffery had Hooper on his tail at the re start, and he was soon relegated by Hooper, Chris Cuming (393) and Tim Farrell (667), but he was to come home a very creditable fourth as Hooper took the victory.
A spectacular start to heat two saw the John Vickery (771) car engulfed in flames on the infield, and the race was brought to a halt as a result.
Once underway Ian Jefferies (992) took up the running, and very impressive he was too whilst out at the front. Dave Luscombe (642) however very quickly stamped his authority on the race, and he moved into the lead before half distance. Jefferies continued his fine show, with only Nathan Maidment (935) making it past him before the chequered flag came down.
Roy Slocombe (513) confidently led the consolation as another superb battle developed further back between Moore, Darby, and Ross Rowe. This allowed Jason Phillips (395) to make headway, and he finally passed second placed Sobey and Slocombe for the lead. Phillips took the victory, with Paul Rice (990) and Ross Rowe making it past the veteran Slocombe before the finish.
Jeffery continued the good form he had shown in his heat by running strongly at the head of the field in the final, as further back Gavin Pike (752) and Paul Rice fought for second. The star grade were to be fair struggling to get on terms with the drivers out at the front, but their cause was helped no end by a caution period, called as a result of Bernie Serpell (612) grinding to a halt half way down the back straight.
Once again the lead for Jeffery had been eliminated, and this time he had Cuming waiting to pounce. It took a lap or so, but Cuming eventually went through into the lead, Luscombe and Farrell now following him through. Towards the end of the racer Jeffery cruelly succumbed to mechanical problems, as Luscombe held off a spirited last bend attack from Farrell for second, Cuming taking the converted Roy Goodman Perpetual Challenge Trophy for a second time in his career.
Once again Jeffery made the strong running from the front of the grid in their final race of the day, the Grand National. With the star grade tripping over themselves in their efforts to make progress Jeffery continued his commanding lead at the front from Paul Rice, and finally this time, with no pesky caution periods to scupper his chances, Jeffery was able to take the chequered flag for the very first time in his career, and he punched the air in delight as he did so.

Bangers (One Sunny Day)
The third annual staging of One Sunny Day for the Bangers saw an impressive showing of 35 Nissan Sunnys in action, with the Mk1 Estate of 197 Peter Dodge being the clear winner of the Oldest/Rarest award.
190 Steve Bailey and 382 Danny Hunt scored heat wins, ahead of victory in the main event for 710 Ben Wilkins on his track debut.
There were almost 20 Sunnys back on track for the DD, and after a bruising contest, 714 Paul Smaldon took the honours.

Stock Rods
A reverse grid format for the Stock Rod West of England Championship saw Nick Taylor (858) as the early leader, but he was shadowed very closely by Barry Trickey (37), Trickey finally finding a way past Taylor. Lindsey Jones (181) came home in third behind Taylor, with defending champion Mike Hibberd (125) rather ominously finishing in fifth place from the rear of the grid.
Hibberd as expected took a flag to flag victory in the reverse grid heat two, as Rob Peters (30) suffered an early spin that held up a significant number of Hibberd’s potential challengers.
A great battle for second place developed as Luke Thomas (916) desperately tried to hold off Andy Giles (565) and Trickey. Giles finally found a way by Thomas for second spot as Trickey did the same for third on the road but he was docked two places for contact as Hibberd took an astronomical victory.
Hibberd and Trickey tied on points for pole position, and on the toss of a coin Trickey won the inside line berth. At the drop of the flag however it was Hibberd who made the better start as he quickly moved in front of Trickey as they entered turn one, and save for a scare as he passed a back marking John Tait (54) late on in the race Hibberd never looked like losing his title. It was a different story for second pace however as Trickey defended his second spot like his life depended on it, Giles frantically trying to find a way through but to no avail. Hibberd was a country mile clear at the flag, whilst Trickey led home Giles in a close finish, with Taylor gamely waiting for any slip-ups in fourth.

Ministox
Ben Goddard (995) led the opening laps of heat one, but no one had an answer to the domination of Lee Porter (923) as he swept through the field to take the opening heat of the day.
It was a different story in a very lively heat two, as Jordan Lobb (930) thwarted the progress of Porter on numerous occasions, by holding him off, and then spinning him aside. Ryan Hoskins (991) turned Ollie Wakefield (944) inside out earning himself a disqualification as Dale Moon (960) swept through for his first win of the season.
Porter very quickly dealt with Lobb in the final by sending him into the infield marker tyres, as he set off after the leaders. Daniel Moss (909) was leading for a time, but Porter moved through into the lead, Moon and Jason Cox (971) taking second and third respectively by the finish, Porter claming the Reg Thomas memorial shield for his efforts.

Ipswich 21/6/08

Many thanks to Mark Henderson for the Ipswich report. Also thanks to Paul Ballard for filling in a couple of small gaps in the results.

Dry & Warm evening with a stiff breeze but there was a problem with a lot of dust. Even the Nationals struggled as there appeared to be no outside line all evening which made it difficult for overtaking. Lets hope that this is sorted for the World Final in a couple of weeks.

Taunton 8 June 2008

Many thanks to Alan Parkinson for his report from Taunton.

At last the sun shone down on Smeatharpe Stadium Taunton, and with a good field of Saloon Stock cars, BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, and Bangerstox, the action on track matched that of the temperature.

Saloon Stock Cars
The opening race of the day was for the Devon Championship, and a superb number of cars had travelled great distances to take part in the event. The race was run in graded order, and this allowed Kenny Peters (964) the chance to lead the field away, but he was quickly moved aside, allowing Ian Govier (328) to come through to take up the running. In a hectic opening to the race Jamie Sampson (149) was unceremoniously spun into the infield marker tyres on the home straight, Tony Gould (240) likewise was moved out of contention. The star grade fought amongst themselves for a number of laps, and this allowed Govier to cement his place at the head of the field, with Richard Paris (11) holding onto second. It was only in the latter stages that Shane Brown (720) and Luke Grief (219) were able to make any impression on the race by moving into second and third respectively, but by then Govier was triumphantly punching the air as he crossed the line to take the Devon title, and on the debut of his new car too.
Two rather hectic heats followed, the first had to be brought to a halt early on due to a huge accident in the west bend.
Once underway Peters took up the running, before Paris took up the challenge. Barry Hollett (30) was running strongly for a time, before Grief took over in second, only to promptly retire, allowing Murray Jones (176) to take up the chase. With one to go Jones latched onto the tail of the Paris car and as they entered turn three for the last time in a brilliant Saloon Stock Car manoeuvre he pushed him aside to take the flag.
It was a similar story in heat two, with Peters and then Paris leading the race, this time Brown was the one who had made the break, and he eventually hunted down Paris to take up the running with three to go. Paris managed to hold on to second, whilst third went the way of World Champion Steve Webster (401), with Phil Powell (199) taking fourth spot.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
A good showing of 34 cars included the return of Bill Batten (167) for his first appearance of the season.
After Ian Jefferies (92) and Bernie Serpell (612) had led for the opening laps of heat one Tim Farrell (667) came through the field to take up the running. A good battle between Piers Cockerill (497) and Justin Fisher (315) ended with them spinning onto the infield, whilst Rob Batten (467) and Neil Hooper (676) traded places behind Serpell until the closing stages when Rob Batten claimed second spot behind Farrell, with Hooper taking third.
Neil Lampshire (737) led the opening laps of heat two, before Darren Wade (891) and Paul Rice (990) took turns at the front. None of them, however, had an answer to the master Bill Batten (167), as he broke free from Dave Luscombe (642) to take up the running. Luscombe gamely followed him through into second, but he was never going to be close enough to make a challenge, thus Batten took the victory on his return after injury.
Lampshire led the consolation, before Chris Rowe (76) moved through to take the lead. Kane Moore (832) came home strongly in second, with Cockerill closing in third by the flag.
An early tangle in the final saw a complete re run called for.
Once underway Matt Jeffery (838) superbly led the final for some time, before Paul Rice took up the running. Further back Bill Batten tangled after running strongly, and he eventually retired. This allowed Hooper to mount his strongest challenge for some time, and he gradually worked his way through the field passing Paul Butcher (189) and Fisher to move into second, to then find himself in the lead as Rice retired with mechanical problems. In the latter stages Luscombe and Butcher moved passed Fisher to claim second and third, behind a rather happy Hooper as he a final victory for the first time in a very long while.
A rather scrappy start to the Grand National saw the field very quickly close together, allowing the white and yellow grade to be very promptly swamped.
Matt Stoneman (127) took up the running, and he was looking good for the win, until the latter stages of the race Luscombe came good, and began to make inroads to Stonemans lead. To his credit Stoneman made Luscombe work for the lead, keeping on the racing line to ensure that Luscombe’s passage through into the lead wasn’t an easy one. Eventually Luscombe made the pass stick to take the lead and the victory, with Stoneman claiming second, his best result for some time.

Bangerstox
Although a fraction down on previous meetings at Smeatharpe this season, there were still 67 drivers in attendance.
Heat wins went to 677 Glenn Nash, 550 Garry Bowers and 991 Ben Hale. In the consolation, 619 Ross Thomas bounced back from a failure to finish his heat by winning a frantic race, and Thomas then took the feature final, leading home Hale and Nash.
475 Ben Sealy completed the race wins, when he emerged victorious from the Allcomers event to conclude another hectic day for the Bangerstox.

Taunton 26 May 2008

Many thanks to Alan Parkinson for the report.

Smeatharpe again fell foul of some dismal weather, but not even a day of wind, rain and drizzle could halt the drama and excitement of another super Crasharama fixture, which featured some terrific cars, outstanding presentation, and a succession of hits and crashes.

Bangers
Some astonishing cars were on display in the unlimited cc Bangers, as drivers responded to the increased number of Oldest/Rarest Car awards.
Heat wins were achieved by 384 John Golden and 336 Shannon Darke. Former Crasharama winner 45 Anthony Croshaw took the consolation, and 23 drivers duly qualified for the big money final. With little in the way of direction possible, 28 Neil Osborne repeatedly looked to block the start-finish line, which contributed to many big crashes, and assorted lead changes. By the conclusion, just three cars were left moving, and it was 384 Goldie, who got home first, to win from 372 Jay Matthews and 988 Billy Dennison.
A typically hectic Allcomers race followed, in which 16 Mike Flaherty unfortunately suffered a driver's dooring which left him badly shaken. In the re-run event, the hits continued to come thick and fast, leaving just four finishers, as 384 Goldie won for a third time.
An impressive showing of 18 drivers finally emerged for the end of day DD, which came down to just three - 265 Stu Foster, 331 Boxer Jack and 190 Pikey - the latter pair sandwiching the gallant Disco Stu at one point. Amazingly, considering the battering his huge vintage Yank had taken, Pikey was the last car running, and that brought a day of tremendous fun and excitement, to an end.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
Wet weather expert Jeremy Moss (707) took up the running in heat one. He was blown away however, as was everyone else, by the turn of speed in the difficult conditions displayed by Chris Bradbury (886) as he swept into the lead. Indeed Bradbury lapped everyone apart from the aforementioned Moss in taking the win.
Eddie Darby (877), who is going much better than of late, led heat two for a time, before he was challenged by Rob Batten (467). Not renown for liking the wet conditions Batten eased by leaving Darby to fend off Richard Bowyer (761).
After Neil Lampshire (737) had led the consolation Martin Coles (511) came by to take up the running, with Neil Hooper (676), at last on the pace, not far behind. However Hooper was to slow and retire, as a result of running out of petrol, leaving Cole to take the victory from Lampshire and Chris Stephens (628).
Whilst Moss led for a good deal of the final, barring a disaster there was only going to be one winner, and that was Bradbury, as he effortlessly cut through the field to take up the running. Moss continued in second place, whilst Darby fell back, having had Bowyer and in the latter stages Tim Farrell (667) pass him by. Bradbury duly took the win, with Moss holding on from Bowyer to take a fine second spot.
An interesting Grand National saw Darby leading from Moss, with Farrell making ground, as too was Bradbury from the handicap. Bowyer and Justin Fisher (315) fought over track space for a couple of laps before Bowyer dispatched Fisher into the west bend. Meanwhile at the front with Farrell sparring with Darby for the lead this allowed Bradbury to get within shouting distance, but whilst he challenged Moss for third he ran out of time, Farrell taking the victory from Darby.

St Day 24 May 2008

Many thanks to Alan Parkinson for the reports and pictures from St Day and Taunton.

Despite continuous rain in the morning, the Spring Bank Holiday fixture at the United Downs Raceway, was held in predominantly dry conditions, as the sun came out in the afternoon to shine on the latest superb offering of Bus & Coach racing.
Buses & Coaches
66 Dave Spooner effected a late race victory in the day's opening Bus & Coach race. Spooner overcame long time leader 707 Jeremy Moss to clinch the win in the late stages.
The next race saw 147 Phil Purdy sprint through the field. Purdy's old Prison minibus, bearing the legend, "Next Stop Alcatraz", even caught up Spooner, and Purdy somehow managed to spin Spooner's bus towards the infield. However, Spooner sought revenge, and with Purdy clear in the lead on the final lap, Spooner pulled his coach across the track on the exit of the final bend. Purdy's route was blocked, Spooner grinned at his moment of devilment, and the crowd roared their approval. Not to be denied, Purdy charged into the side of Spooner's coach, and managed to batter his way through to take the chequered flag.
For the end of day destruction contest, Spooner nudged 141 Toby Tiddy down over the infield banking. However, 354 Mark Sear of Stithians shoved Spooner into a similar position. The temptation was too much for Sear, and he charged in reverse at Spooner, sending him down the banking and on to his side. In four years of Bus & Coach racing, this was the first time that a full size coach had been knocked off its wheels. That left just Moss and Purdy, and Moss inflicted the last blow to take the victory and end a hugely entertaining event.

Bangerstox

There was a good showing of 45 drivers for the Cornish Championship,
After heat wins for Pete Jennings (119) and Treve Wills (804) Andrew Lomas (144) took the victory in the consolation.
In the final long time leader Paul May (778) was passed in the closing stages by Lomas, with Wills in third spot. The race ran its course, with a large number of star graded drivers at watching from the infield. Lomas duly took the title and the right to wear the St Piran cross on the roof of his car. Jamie Jenkin (479) took the victory in the allcomers from a fast closing Danny Hunt (382).

Stock Rods
Newcomer to the Stock Rod grid, Luke Thomas (916), using the ex Brendon Sealy car, sped to victory in the opening race, winning with ease from Rob Peters (30).
Indeed, Thomas looked on course for a victory in the final, only to clash with a backmarker on the last lap sending him sliding into the turnstile bend fence, and out of the race. This handed the victory to Mike Hibberd (125), who had earlier overcome a resolute Rick Lee (578) to take second spot, Chris Drake (193) moved up to third at the flag. Helped in the pits by Lee, Thomas once more dominated proceedings, taking yet another victory to round off an interesting debut for the youngster. Lee must have been ruing his assistance in helping get the 916 car back on track, as although he closed in on Thomas, he ran out of time and had to settle for second spot, Barry Trickey (37) came home in third place.

Ministox
Dan Moss (909) took the opening heat victory, as the star grade tangled in the opening laps to put paid to any chances of victory, Amy Deeble (985) came home in second place.
David Spooner (999) led heat two for a time, before Ollie Wakefield (944) took up the running. Slowly but surely Wakefield was reeled in, Porter eventually hitting the front in the closing stages, leading home Wakefield and Dale Moon (960).
A clash with Jordan Lobb in the opening exchanges of the final sidelined visitor Bryson Walker (172), whilst Deeble suffered a spectacular crash on the back straight that required treatment for the youngster. Dan Moss forged into the lead, leaving Porter and Moon to fight over second and third, Ben Goddard (995) taking an excellent fourth spot from Lobb.
