Gourdon is a
traditional fishing village on the North Sea Coast with a natural harbour
enhanced, initially by Thomas Telford at the beginning of the 19th
century, but on several occasions since. Historically
it has been linked with the nearby small town of Inverbervie which lies a
short distance north. Inverbervie's fleet left for Gourdon because of the
increasing impracticalities of using "Bervie" as a working port
with its shingle beach and shifting river-mouth. Gourdon is still a
working fishing port with lobster pots piled around the harbour side and
smokehouses where fish is filleted and smoked and I suppose that’s one
of the main attractions in that it is one of a dwindling number of
thriving working fishing villages along this coast. At one time there were
many little ports like Gourdon, but sadly, these days, they’re an
endangered species. Aside from the harbour Gourdon also has a small lifeboat museum which is worth a visit.
