James Chillas appears on the 1841 census for Banchory Devenick as a 15 year old agricultural labourer for Robert Duthie at Balladrum.

James and Margaret moved to the parish of Old Meldrum soon after their marriage and appear on the 1851 census for Old Meldrum at Bogs.
