The ISMS Award Scheme - Rating system

Award Aims     Awards available     Criteria     Rating     Top tips     Application form     Winners

The ISMS has adopted strict criteria for its Award scheme, you should read them before applying. The following is a summary of the rating system that will also be applied by our evaluators. There are links to helpful tips in some section headings.

Core requirements

maximum points

Content

For ISMS Awards site content is everything. The website must add value to the genre of wordplay on the web by containing something humorous, interesting, original, novel, useful, educational, artistic - and it must be well written. The site content must be of such quality that visitors will want to come back again and again.

The site must be family friendly, and additional points may be awarded if it has already received some official recognition such as Family Friendly Site accreditation.

Visitors must have the option to turn off any background music on the site.

50

Layout & Design

Layout and colour should be 'easy on the eye', pages should have a consistent look and feel with a good colour scheme. Pages that are difficult to read due to colour clashes or unnecessary animation may result in no further assessment of your site.

Pages that scroll down and down and down will lose points for more than two or three 'page downs' without a 'back to top' facility.

As a minimum there should be clear headings on each page. Additional points may be awarded for innovative, creative or amusing design and layout and for the quality of original graphics.

15

Navigation

Visitors to the site must know where they are in the site and should not get lost in a maze of pages. There should always be clear links to other pages in the site. Navigations should be intuitive and user friendly.

All links must work first time and every time. Additional points may be awarded for a good, clear or novel site map or navigation system.

10

Loading time

The site must load quickly. Points will be deducted for a home page loading time in excess of 60 seconds.

10

Language

The site must be primarily in English and - considering the nature of this awarding body - good English (or perhaps not, if we can pick up a few isms from your site, be they intentional or not). We cannot consider sites written in other languages unless they can easily be translated using, for example, Alta Vista Translator. If we cannot read your site content then we cannot evaluate it.

10

Bonus

The Chairman's special award for sites with that 'something extra' or for maintaining ongoing interest.
