CORBET RESEARCH INTERESTS

Hannah Corbett (1643-1685/6) was my 7xgreat grandmother. Her line of descent shown below from the Normans, Hugh, Robert and Roger Corbet is not wholly on the male line, but is more reliable than the pure male line descent.

Hugh Corbet or le Corbeau. A noble Norman. Came over to England from Normandy with his sons, Roger and Robert, at the time of the Conquest. He was alive at least between 1040 and 1080. He had four sons, Hugh, Roger, Robert and Renaud.

Roger Corbet. Alive at least between 1080 and 1122. May have fought at the Battle of Hastings. Held 24 manors in Shropshire in 1086 (Domesday Survey). Children: William, Everard (Ebrard), probably Simon, possibly Roger.

There are then two alternative descents to Thomas Corbet of Wattlesborough, one via William, the other via Simon and his son, Simon:

William Corbet of Wattlesborough, also of Caus Castle. Wife's name not known. Possible children: Robert, Thomas, Philip and Roger. Alive 1136.

Simon Corbet. Alive at least between 1136 and 1155. Children: probably Roger and Simon, possibly William.

Simon Corbet of Pontesbury. Children: probably Robert, Hugh and William, possibly also Thomas and Philip.

Thomas Corbet of Wattlesborough. His wife's name is not known. He had two children, Richard and Roger.

Sir Richard Corbet of Wattlesborough. His wife's name is not known, and Richard is his only known child. He was alive in 1217.

Sir Richard Corbet of Wattlesborough. Married Johanna Toret, the daughter and co-heir of Bartholomew Toret (or Turet), of Moreton Toret, Salop. He settled at Moreton Toret following the marriage, and the name of the manor was changed to Moreton Corbet, by which name it is still known today. Richard was their only known child. Sir Richard died before 1235.

Sir Richard Corbet of Wattlesborough and Morton Corbet. He was Justiciar of the Assize, Salop., in 1241. He married Petronilla de Booley, Lady and heiress of Booley and Edgbolton. They had three children, Robert, Richard and Petronilla. Sir Richard died in 1255.

Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet and Wattlesborough. Alive 1254/5. Married firstly Katherine le Strange, daughter of Sir John, Lord Strange of Knockin and Middle, by whom he had a son, Thomas. Married secondly Matilda de Arundel, daughter of John de Arundel, Lord of Tideshall, by whom he had children, Thomas, Fulk and John, and probably also Richard, Roger and Petronilla. There is some doubt about the line of descent here, as it is possible that Richard was the son and not the brother of Thomas, and was therefore the grandson and not the son of Sir Robert.

Sir Richard Corbet of Morton and Wattlesborough. Wife's name not known. Children: Robert and Roger.

Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet and Wattlesborough. Born 1304. Married Elizabeth le Strange, daughter of Sir Fulk le Strange, Lord of Whitchurch, Seneschal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, and Baron Strange of Blackmere. They had children, Fulk, Roger, Thomas, Eleanor, Johanna (Joan), John, and possibly Robert. Sir Robert died in 1375.

Sir Roger Corbet of Morton Corbet and Shawbury, Salop. Married Margaret Erdington, daughter of Sir Giles de Erdington, Lord of Shawbury. They had four children: Robert, Joan, Eleanor and Margaret. He died in 1395 or 1396.

Sir Robert Corbet. He was Chamberlain to King Henry VI, and was Sheriff of Shropshire, 1433. He married Margaret Mallory, daughter of Sir William Mallory. They had six children: Thomas, Roger, Dorothy, Elizabeth, Mary and Juliana, and possibly also Robert, who became Rector of Donnington. Sir Robert died in 1438.

Sir Roger Corbet of Morton Corbet. Alive 1418. He married Elizabeth Hopton, daughter and heiress of Thomas Hopton of Hopton. They had six children: Jane, Mary, Anne, Robert, Richard and Elizabeth. Probably died 1466/7.

Sir Richard Corbet of Morton Corbet. Born c. 1448. He married Elizabeth Devereux, daughter of Sir Walter Devereux, Lord Ferrers of Chartley. They had seven children: George, Robert, Margaret, Catherine, Elizabeth, Anne and Mary. He was referred to as a "zealous Lancastrian". He died in 1493.

Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet, also of Dodington, co. Northampton. Born c. 1475. He married Elizabeth Vernon, daughter of Sir Henry Vernon of Haddon Hall, co. Derby. They had seven children: Roger, Richard, Reginald, Dorothy, Mary, Anne and Jane. Sir Robert died in 1513 and was buried at Morton Corbet.

Jane Corbet. Married Thomas Lee of Langley, Salop. They had a daughter, Jocosa, and probably also Katherine, who married Edward Corbett in 1546. This Edward was a great-uncle to Robert Corbett (Jane's great grandson).

Jocosa (Joyce) Lee. Married Robert Morton of Haughton, Salop. They had two daughters, Anne and Jane.

Jane Morton. Married Thomas Corbett. They had 15 children, mostly baptised at Leebotwood, Stapleton and Longnor between 1586 and 1610: William, Elizabeth, Edward, Robert, Sarah, Richard, Thomas, Philip, Richard, George, Anne, Roger, Humphrey, Eleanor and Ursula.

Robert Corbett. Baptised at Leebotwood, July 20th, 1591. Married Etheldred (alias Elizabeth) Drewry c. 1625. They had at least seven children: Jane (1625, died 1625), Francis (1636), Catharine (1637), Thomas (1639/40), Anne (1641), Hannah (1643) and Margaret (1645). Robert was described in 1625 as a Goldsmith of London. He was also styled as being of Dorrington. He was buried on June 16th, 1669, at Leebotwood, the register describing him as "Mr. Robert Corbett, of Longnor".

Hannah Corbett, my 7xgreat grandmother, was baptised in 1643 at Condover, Shropshire. She married Henry Acton at Longnor, Shropshire, in 1671.  They had 6 children, all baptised in Longnor: Margaret (1671/2 - 1699/1700), Etheldra (1673), Hannah (1675 - 1759), Henry (1677), Robert (1679), and Francis (1682).  Hannah died in 1685/6 and was buried at Leebotwood, Shropshire.
