The Will of John Croginton, 1535-1599, Worfield, Salop.
In the name of God Amen this xxxth of October 1597 I John Croginton the elder of Newton in the countie of Salope Yoman being sicke in body but of pfect mind and memorye, doo make this my last will & testament in manner and forme followynge, in the name of the father, of the sonne, & of the holy ghost. First I bequeath my soule unto almyghty God believing to be saved by the merite of my only redeemer & Savyour Jesus Christ, and my body to the earth whereof the Lord ... made me within the churcheyard of Worfield. Also I give and bequeath to the prish churche of Worfield xiid, also I give and bequeath to my sonne John and hys heyres forever to be heirloomes the things hereafter nexte of first mentyoned, that ys to saye, one witche[?] in the kytchyn, one weeting fatte, one kneadynge knive, one chest in the hall for whych John must give his brother xs, one bedstead in the loft over the hall and the seelinge with the peynted clothes in my house at Newton, one tableborde, and the benches in the hall, all the which I doe leave as heyrloomes and standard to my house. Item I geve and bequesth to every one of my childrens children one shepe to be delyvered after the decease of my wyfe. I geve and bequeath to John my sonne all the werke and doinge which shalbe ..... the ..... after the decease of my wyfe.
All the residue of my goods movables and unmovables & chattells whatsoever I doe geve and bequeath unto my three children to be had and taken to their own severall uses imediately after the decease or marriage of Alice my wyffe, for my will ys that my said wyffe Alice shall have the occupacion thereof and every .... thereof after my decease so long as she shall live sole and unmarryed. And after her decease or marryage the same to be divided to them in their severall parts or portions at the disposition or oversight of Mr Thomas Barkeley of Crodnes and Walter Nycholls of Stockton on the furniture of them except the cubbard in the halle the wytche in the kytchyn which I gyve and bequeathe to Roger my sonne. Item I gyve to the poore of the parishe xxs and except one the best chest or coffer which I gyve and bequeathe to Magdalen my daughter to be delyvered after the decease of my wyffe and for the performance of this my last will and testament doe nominate and appoynt my wyffe Alice Croginton my sole and only executrix and doe request Mr Thomas Barkeley and Walter Nicholls to take the paynes and oversight and to be overseers for the true performance and accomplyshment thereof, these being wyttnesses Thomas Barkeley, Walter Nicholls, Henrye Haselwood, John Croginton, John Catstrey.
