It is assumed that the surname Froggatt derives from the village of that name in Derbyshire. The concentration of the name in early times is certainly in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.
'The Place Names of Derbyshire' (Publications of the Record Commission, London, 1959) concludes that the derivation of the place name is probably from 'frog cottage', as in 'frogga' and 'cot'. 'Frogga' refers to a damp or low-lying situation, in this case being close to the left bank of the Derwent.
