The Froggatts of Shropshire have lived in the county since 1773, having arrived there from the Alrewas/Lichfield area of Staffordshire, via a very brief spell at Yarpole, Herefordshire. Their presence in Staffordshire has been traced back to 1600. My 5xgreat grandfather, Elias Froggatt, was the ancestor of all the Shropshire Froggatts. He was baptised at Alrewas, Staffordshire, in 1745 and married Mary Wright at Lichfield in 1765. The location of the birth/baptism of their son, John (born c. 1770) is unknown, as is that of their daughter, Margaret (probably older than John), but their next child, Elias (1772) was baptised at Yarpole, Herefordshire, and their next, Thomas (1775) at Stoke St. Milborough, Shropshire. The family moved to Callow Farm, which they rented from the owners of Bitterley Court (the Walcotts) in 1773/74.
The Shropshire Froggatts have been predominantly farmers throughout, mainly living around Bitterley, Stoke St. Milborough and Stanton Lacy, and there are still Froggatts living and farming in this area today. In the 19th century, part of the family migrated to Herefordshire, particularly the Little Hereford area and the Bullingham/Little Dewchurch area. One branch of the Shropshire family emigrated to New Zealand from 1864 and settled in the Invercargill area. This included brothers, George, Joshua and Caleb Froggatt, and their sisters, Jane, Mary and Clara, all children of Isaac Froggatt (born 1808, Bitterley, Salop) and Lucy (née Chatham).
