There are believed to be 5 main Froggatt families in New Zealand:
|
The earliest immigrants, from Shropshire |
Three sons of Isaac Froggatt of Featherknowle, Ashford Bowdler, Salop., namely George, Joshua and Caleb Froggatt, and their sisters, Jane, Mary and Clara. George and Joshua emigrated in 1864, Caleb two years later. They settled in Invercargill. |
This family is closely related to my Shropshire Froggatts, and more details are provided below. |
|
Probably the largest from Mayfield, Staffs. |
Descendants of James Froggatt (son of Nicholas and Dorothy (née Booth)) and Mary (née Kirkwood) who emigrated to NZ in 1874 with their sons, Benjamin and George. Benjamin married Annie Laura Maria Parnell in Christchurch in 1880, while George married Lucy Mary Lowe at Waimamaku in 1892. |
Milton Froggatt is descended from this family - visit his web site or e-mail him at frogg@igrin.co.nz |
|
From Matlock, Derbyshire |
Descendants of James Froggatt, born 1725 in Derbyshire. The NZ branch of the family settled in New Plymouth. |
Paul Froggatt is a descendant of this family and an active researcher of the family. |
|
From Baslow, Derbyshire |
Descendants of Edgar John Froggatt (born Baslow, Derbyshire, 1878) and his wife, Edith Minnie Goodwin, who married at Heage, Derbyshire, in 1881. The family still live predominantly in the Waikato, King Country area of NZ. The family can be traced back to the late 16th century in Baslow. |

A family recently emigrated from Bradford. |
Raymond Lloyd Froggatt and wife, June, arrived in NZ c. 1962. The family live in Wellington, NZ. |

Isaac Froggatt, 1808 - 1885
The patriarch of the Invercargill Froggatts was Isaac Froggatt who was born on October 30th, 1808, and baptised at Bitterley, Shropshire. He was the son of Elias Froggatt and Ann (née Lycett). He married Lucy (alias Mary) Chatham and had 13 children, born between 1835 and 1856. He farmed at Featherknowle, Ashford Bowdler, Shropshire (where descendants still farm today) at least from 1841 and died there in 1885. He was converted to Methodism in 1842, became a local preacher, and was instrumental through his funding in the establishment of the Primitive Methodist Mission in Invercargill.
George Froggatt, 1839 - 1912
The second son of Isaac, George was born at Ashford Bowdler in 1839, and married Priscilla Andrews at Ludlow in 1864. He emigrated to New Zealand later that year, sailing on the 'Adjmere'. He settled in Invercargill, where he took contracts for road building before acquiring a butchery business and then an auctioneer, stock and station agent. He was Mayor of Invercargill in 1885, and again in 1903-04. He had two sons (George Ernest and Albert Samuel) and a daughter (Lucy Anna). He died on Lake Wanaka in 1912.
Joshua Froggatt, 1847 - 1935
The seventh (but fifth surviving) and youngest son of Isaac, Joshua was born at Ashford Bowdler in 1847. He emigrated with his brother, George in 1864. He married late in life, to Mary Lucy Ward, at Invercargill in 1901 and had a son and two daughters. He settled at Long Bush, near Invercargill, where he was an apiarist and orchardist.
Caleb Froggatt, 1846 - 1926
The sixth son of Isaac, Caleb was born at Ashford Bowdler in 1846. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1866, two years after his brothers. He married Margaret Jane Newall at Invercargill in 1874 and had at least 12 children. He started in Invercargill as a butcher, later farmed in Long Bush, before opening a large brick yard, and finally settling back in Invercargill as a grocer. He seems to have a bit of a "black sheep" among a family of devout Methodists as he was rather fond of whisky. In his father's Will, Caleb's share was left in trust to George and Joshua to "pay such weekly sum as they see fit".
