WILL OF ELLIS FROGGATT of LICHFIELD, 1664


Ellis Froggatt (1X2), the son of William Froggatt (1W1) and Anne, was baptised on 30th January, 1603, at Mayfield, Staffs. He married Alice by whom he had five children (of whom two died in infancy), all baptised at Lichfield, Staffs., between 1628 and 1638. He was buried on June 14th, 1664, at Lichfield.

His will was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on January 7th, 1664/5.


In the Name of god Amen I Ellis Froggatt of the City and County of Lichfield Gentleman being weak and sick in body but of perfect memory praised be to God First I do make this my last Will and Testament in writing under my own hand in manner and form following And first and principally I commend my soul into the hands of my God and Saviour Jesus Christ trusting in the merits of His bitter death and passion to receive pardon for my sins in this life and in the end everlasting salvation And for my body to be interred at the discretion of my executirx hereafter named And whereas by articles of agreement at the marriage of my son Edward it may appear he was to pay unto my daughter Katherine Froggatt the sum of one hundred pounds or otherwise as I should dispose thereof I do therefore give and bequeath fourscore pounds of the said hundred pounds to my grandchild Ellis Froggatt and twenty pounds to my grandchild Sara Froggatt And if either of them die before it becomes due to them then to be divided equally among the survivors of the children of my son Edward then living by Mary his now wife upon her body by him lawfully begotten or to be begotten Item I give unto my daughter Katherine Froggatt the sum of Thirty pounds due to me by bond from William Adye now of the City of Lichfield mercer Twenty pounds due to me by bond from goodman Braddock of Brereton Twenty pounds due to me by bond from goodman Clarke of Shenstone Five pounds due to me from one Twyford of London and Twenty pounds due to me by bill from my brother William Froggatt. Item I give and bequeath more unto my daughter Katherine the sum of fourscore pounds to be paid her by my executirx within three years after my decease Item I give unto my said daughter Katherine one press in the kitchen which was widow Napper's one new table on the hall carpet and six Dusset stools one joined bed which came from Mr Blactone and was my wife's Two chairs six cushions one feather bed two bolsters two blankets one rug red curtains and vallance four pair of flaxen and hampen sheets one dozen of napkins two pillowbeers one long flaxen table cloth six pewter dishes of the middle sort a big pewter candlestick and a flagon one silver salte provided nevertheless and my will and true meaning is that if my said daughter Katherine depart this life before the legacies before to her bequeathed become due That then such part or parts shall two parts thereof be paid and I do hereby give it to my son Edward's children And the other to my daughter Meeke's children of London After my wife's decease I give unto my son Edward the lease at Greenhill of Dennis Napper's house and not before, she making no alteration thereof without my son Edward's consent Item I give and bequeath unto my son Meeke's three children now being ten pounds which my son Meeke oweth me by bond Item I give to my daughter Mary Meeke twenty shillings to Edward Froggatt my grandchild twenty shillings Item I give to my servant Elizabeth Carter twenty shillings to be paid her within twelve months next after my decease Item I give all my wearing clothes and apparel whatsoever (except my best gown) to Edward Froggatt my son and George Meeke my son in law to be divided betwixt them by my executrix All the rest of my goods moveable and immoveable I give unto my truly loving wife Alice Froggatt during her natural life And then to be disposed of by her amongst my children and grandchildren as she shall think fit And of this my Will I make my said wife my sole and only executirx not any wise doubting of her due performance thereof And I make my brother William Froggatt and my kinsman Adin Froggatt overseers And that my wife shall have and enjoy this house wherein I now live according to my agreement with her at the time of intermarriage And further it is my mind and desire that my son Edward Froggatt permit and suffer my wife to have and to hold one of the two barns in Frog Lane and Bakers Lane during her life to lay her corn in and for so doing I give him forty pounds which he oweth me In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the second day of February in the year of Our Lord God one thousand six hundred sixty and three
