WILL OF EDWARD FROGGATT of ALREWAS, 1724


Edward Froggatt (1Z4), the son of Edward Froggatt (1Y2) and Mary, was baptised on February 22nd, 1661, at Lichfield, Staffs. He married Catherine Reynolds on February 14th, 1685/6 at Tatenhill, Staffs., and they had three children. Catherine died in 1712, and Edward then Rebecca Hackett on January 19th, 1713/14, and they had a further three children. Edward was died in 1724.

Edward’s Will was written July 7th and 16th, 1724, and was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on March 10th, 1724/5.


In the name of God Amen I Edward Froggatt of Hoverly also Haverly in the parish of Alrewas and county of Stafford Senior Yeoman being weak of body but of sound and perfect mind and memory praised be Almighty God for the same calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament in manner following First and principally I commend my sould to God that gave it assuredly trusting in and through the merits of my only Saviour and Redeemer to receive full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins and offences and to inherit everlasting life and my body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named And as touching my Wordly Estate I give devise and bequeath of the same as followeth Imprimis I give unto my son Ellis one shilling and to my son Edward one Guinea and to my daughter Christian now the wife of John Crumpe of the parish of Cripplegate London Butcher the sum of sixty pounds All which said three legacies to my three said children by my first wife Catherine order direct and appoint to be paid by my executors herein after named within one year next after my decease Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca the sum of forty pounds and to my son Edward by the said last venture all the Right Title interest property Claim and Demand of in and to all that house messuage or tenement called Haverly alias Hoverly House with all and singular its appurtenances situate lying and being in the parish of Alrewas in the County of Stafford which I purchased of Thomas Kent of Bentley in the parish of Maverton Ridware in the County of Stafford to me and the heirs of my said latter wife Rebecca and also the sum of ten pounds Item I give and bequeath to my son William by my wife Rebecca the sum of twenty pounds All which legacies I order to be paid in lawful money of Great Britain the said three last mentioned gifts legacies and bequests to be paid with lawful money of Great Britain when they shall attain the several ages of one and twenty years which said sums or legacies payable as aforesaid shall be answered and payable by Mr. Francis Allen of Sittells junior by virtue of one Bond of one hundred pounds principal from him wherein his father Mr Francis Allen stands bound with him for payment and interest and one other Bond from Mr Richard Onion of the City of Lichfield baker for payment of thirty pounds and interest and of this my last Will I make ordain and constitute and appoint Peter Hackett my late wife’s brother and my said son in law John Crump joint executors of this my last will and testament revoking all other Will or Wills by me made and I do constitute and fix this as my Last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of July Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and twenty four

Codicil

July the sixteenth Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and twenty-four I the within named Edward Froggatt do hereby order direct and appoint that this codicil wrote hereon the back of my within will shall remain and continue as part of my said Will to all intents constitutions and purposes whatsoever as if the same had been therein particularly mentioned and expressed which I order direct and appoint in manner following that is to say that if it shall happen that one of my children by my late wife Rebecca shall happen to die before their respective portion within mentioned become due and payable the same shall go and descend to the survivors and in case two of my said children shall die before such portion or portions become due and payable then the whole then to go to the survivor of the said three and if all the said three happen to die before their said portions become due and payable the whole thereof to go and descend to my daughter Christian the wife of John Crump within named and I do hereby order direct and appoint that my said executors within named shall (receive?) fifty shillings apiece for their trouble about this my Will and all funeral and other charges and expenses occasioned thereby to be deducted out of my said estate and all the rest residue and remainder of my estate whatsoever I give devise and bequeath unto my said last mentioned three children to be divided equally share and share alike or to the survivor or survivors of them and in case all the said three die before they attain their ages respectively then to my daughter Christian Crump In testimony whereof I the said Edward Froggatt have hereunto set my hand and seal the said sixteenth day of July Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and twenty four.
