OBITUARY of CALEB FROGGATT of INVERCARGILL, 1926

Caleb Froggatt (1E26), the son of Isaac Froggatt (1D8) and Lucy (née Chatham), was born in 1846, at Ashford Bowdler, Salop. He emigrated to New Zealand in 1866, where he married Margaret Jane Newall on April 29th, 1874, at Invercargill. They had at least 12 children. Caleb died in 1926.

The following obituary was printed in the Southland Times, on Tuesday August 24th, 1926

Another of Southland’s early pioneers has passed away in the person of Mr. Caleb Froggatt, aged 80 years.

Mr. Froggatt was born in Shropshire, England, in 1846 and arrived in New Zealand in 1866. Two years previously two brothers the late Mr. George Froggatt and Mr. Joshua Froggatt, now of Invercargill, had arrived in the Dominion. Mr. Caleb Froggatt commenced business in Invercargill as a butcher shortly after his arrival from England. Later he bought a farm at Longbush, where he remained for a number of years. While there he entered into partnership with Mr. William Newall, and opened a brick yard on a fairly large scale. He then sold out and came back to Invercargill where he established a grocer business in Tay Street. He retired from that business and was for many years associated with the local branch of the Australian Mutual provident Society.

The late Mr. Froggatt was married in 1874 to a daughter of Mr. William Newall. In addition to the widow, the surviving members of the family are Mr. Thomas Froggatt (Dunedin), Mr. Richard Froggatt (Wellington), Mr. Isaac Froggatt (America), Mrs. Desmond Nevin (Invercargill), Misses Lillian and Gwendoline Froggatt (Invercargill) and Miss Winifred Froggatt (Gisborne). Another son, George, was killed in the Great War.

The above Obituary was provided to me by the late Bevis Malone of New Zealand. Bevis was a great grand-daughter of Caleb’s brother, George.
