LE STRANGE RESEARCH INTERESTS

The name le Strange appears in various versions of the Battle Abbey Roll, and therefore it is possible that a member of the family fought with William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings, 1066, but this can not be proven.

My le Strange ancestral line is believed to be as follows:

Ruald or Roland Extraneus. Probably alive late 11th century, early 12th. Children included Guy.

Guy le Strange, alias Wido Extraneus. He is said to have been a younger son of the Duke of Bretagne, and to have accompanied Henry II to England when he came to take possession of the crown of England in 1154. Had six children: Guy, Ralph, Hamo, William, Hugh and John.

John le Strange, of Ness & Cheswardine, which he had by gift of King Henry II. He married Hawise or Maud le Brun, sister and heiress of Reginald le Brun. They had children, John, Guy, Robert, Hamo, William, and possibly Ralph. He was dead by 1199.

John le Strange, Lord of Knockin, &c., and of Betton Strange. He married Amicia, surname unknown. There is conflicting information as to his children - he certainly had a son, John, but other possible children are Ralph, Robert, Roger, Hamo and William. He was Sheriff of Shropshire, 1216. Probably died 1225/6.

John le Strange, Lord of Knockin, &c. He married Lucia de Tregoze, daughter of Robert de Tregoze. They had children, John and Avice, and probably also Robert and Roger. He may also have been the father of Katherine le Strange, first wife of Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet and Wattlesborough. He was Sheriff of Shropshire, 1237-48, and was also Justice of Chester. He died 1268/9.

Robert le Strange, of Blackmere, Sutton Madoc and Wrockwardine. He had Blackmere through his wife, and Wrockwardine as a gift from his brother, either John or Hamo le Strange. There is some doubt as to whether he was the son of John and Lucia, as he could have been the son of this John's father, i.e. the son of John and Amicia. He married Eleanor de Blancminster, one of the four daughters and co-heiresses of William de Blancminster or de Whitchurch or de Warenne. They were married c. 1265. They had children, John and Fulk, possibly also Robert. He died in 1275/6.

Sir Fulk le Strange, Lord of Whitchurch, Seneschal of the Duchy of Aquitaine, and Baron Strange of Blackmere. He was born c. 1267. He was the younger son of Robert, but inherited the Barony Strange when his brother, John, died in 1288/9. He married Eleanor Giffard, daughter and co-heiress of John Giffard of Brimsfield. They had five children, John, Fulk, Hame or Hamo, Elizabeth and Maud. Sir Fulk died in 1324.

Elizabeth le Strange, my 17xgreat grandmother, married Sir Robert Corbet of Morton Corbet and Wattlesborough, co. Salop. They had children, Fulk, Roger, Thomas, Eleanor, Johanna (Joan), John, and possibly Robert.
