LYCETT RESEARCH INTERESTS

My interest in the Lycett family stems from my 4xgreat grandmother, Ann Lycett, who married Elias Froggatt on June 17th, 1794, at Stoke St. Milborough, Shropshire, by licence from Thomas Clarke, Registrar.  Elias is recorded as a bachelor of the parish of Stanton Lacy (which is very close to Stoke St. Milborough).  Ann is recorded as a minor (by inference, of Stoke St. Milborough).  The marriage was witnessed by Francis Lycett (Ann's father), Elizabeth Kidson and Samuel Tayler.

It is inferred from her burial record that Ann was born in 1777 or 1778.  This is consistent with the statement that she was a minor at the time of her marriage in 1794.  She died on July 19th, 1821, and was buried in Bitterley on July 22nd, 1821, aged 43; her abode is stated as Bitterley.  She is buried with her husband in Bitterley churchyard - the stone is badly weathered, but it is still possible to read (characters in italics not clearly decipherable "In Memory of ANN Wife of ELIAS FROGGATT Who died July 19th 1821 Aged 45 Years. Also of Henry their Son died in his Infancy. Also of ELIAS FROGGATT who died 11th July 1859 in ..... 88th year."  There is also a verse at the foot of the stone, but I can't decipher that at all.

The marriage licence for Ann Lycett and Elias Froggatt indicates that Ann's father was named Francis. Though Ann's baptism has not been traced, it seems reasonably certain that she was the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Lycett who moved from Milwich, Staffs., to Stoke St. Milborough ("SSM") (a distance of some 40 miles), probably in 1790 or 1791. Francis and Elizabeth had several other children, including Ellin (Eleanor) (1772-, had illegitimate children in SSM, 1794/5), Francis (1774-, m. 1801 SSM), Elizabeth (-1776), Hannah (1776-), Thomas (-1779), Richard (1780-, m. 1805 Stottesdon & Farlow, Salop), Elizabeth (1785-1808/9, had illegit. child 1805 at SSM), Thomas (1788-88), Hannah (1790-1808), and probably Jane (m. 1791 at SSM). The parents may have been Francis Lycett and Elizabeth Bentley who married at Stone, Staffs., on 21st July 1765. Elizabeth may have been the daughter of John and Mary Bentley, bapt. at Fulford, Staffs., on 2nd March 1745.

Possibilities for the baptism of Francis Lycett include:

Other than the above family who moved in from Milwich, the substantial majority of the Lycetts in Shropshire were in the neighbouring parishes of Westbury (from 1660) and Pontesbury (from 1743). There is a strong recurrence of the name Francis in both parishes, thus implying a close link with the Staffordshire family. 8 of the 66 Lycett baptisms in the Shropshire IGI were Francis, which compares with a general incidence of the Francis name in the U.K. of about 1/2% at this time.
