From the words of the Cluracan, "There was once a man whom many considered to be wise; a learned man dedicated to great studies of the unknown, to researching the mysteries of creation. But such pursuits are foolish when caution gives way to recklessness. This wise fool’s quest brought him to an island once thought a legend, a myth newly risen and powered by the machinery of terrible beings better left forgotten. Ah, if only the wise fool had left well alone. But no, onto the island he ventured and two things he found on Cabora’s unnatural shores. The first was a weapon never touched by fire, a powerful blade about which other tales have been told. The second was death, for Captain Smythe, the wise fool of whom we speak, was torn apart by the dastardly traps within the island’s core. His life has ended, but has his story truly reached its conclusion? For some say that Smythe still sails the seas, that he wields a stolen sword and searches for the key to a lock which must never be opened."

Robert Smythe was once a foremost member of the Explorer’s Society, admired for his daring exploits and respected for his dazzling intellect. In Octavus 1668, he was one of the many adventurers to brave the unnatural shores of Cabora. Tragically he died on the island, but, more terribly, his identity was absorbed by one of the released Clockwork Automatons. For the past year this Smythe Construct has been using Smythe’s contacts to pursue its own sinister ends. The automaton intends to open a portal through the Barrier in order to free the Syrneth monstrosities trapped beyond. The means to do so lie scattered across the Midnight Archipelago: a key, a power source and a gate. As his goal draws closer, Smythe has become willing to use increasingly foul measures to complete his quest.
