The son of an Eisen knight, who died before his birth, and a Montaigne serving girl, who died while he was a child, Stefan was raised in a Rose and Cross orphanage in Manche. The growing boy's principled behaviour and athletic ability impressed his guardians who recommended him to the local guards and, in turn, to the royal musketeers. Stefan served with courage and honour and won many admirers, including the beautiful courtier Annette du Surlign. The two fell in love and married, with Stefan vowing to protect Annette and defend her cause with all of his life.

Following the revolution, Stefan distinguished himself when he joined Annette on a diplomatic mission through the Eisen konigreichs. Although hindered by the cunning schemes of Frauline von Witte and Arnaud du Charouse, his bravery and courage won respect and reward from Fauner Posen. The actions of the musketeer were instrumental in defeating enemies of Posen who had conspired to bring a battle to the heart of her Posenstadt. This mission also laid the seeds for negotiation to secure the release of General Montegue du Montagine from the Eisenfurst.

After further intervention by the Church of the Prophets and Anne du Montaigne's diplomats, Montegue was not only set free, but given a force of Posen's Iron Guards to end the tyranny of the Frenzy. Several acts of bravery and courage by Stefan brought him to Montegue's attention and won him promotion within the Musketeers. He was at the forefront of the armies which followed Montegue and helped to restore Montaigne's monarchy.
