Work Experience
1998 - Date: Bombardier Transportation, Derby. Control Centre Development & Systems Assurance
- Senior Assurance Engineer, responsible for implementation of Requirements Management and Design Review Strategies
- Developed a Control Centre Strategy for the East Midlands Renewal Project.
- Bid preparation for the Advance Engineering function on Railtrack's East & West Midlands recontrol schemes and for London Underground's BCV and SSL Infracos.
- Project Engineer for implementation of UNIX based Control System on Railtrack's Thameslink 2000 Project. Responsibility for team of 25 people based in Derby, Reading, Denmark and Thailand. Team is responsible for developing Safety Case, development of compliant symbol sets, requirements management, adaptation and demonstration
of system ability to meet SIL2 safety requirements.
- Project Engineer for system enhancements to London Underground's VDU Control System and Dot-Matrix Indicator systems on the East London Line.
- Substantial experience in the HAZOP process, and has led HAZOPs on aspects of the Manchester Metrolink, Leeds Remodelling & Resignalling and West Coast Main Line TAWS Systems.
- Senior Engineer, partly responsible for developing the Adtranz response to Railtrack's ITT for 9 Management Centres nation-wide.
1996 - 1998: Railtrack plc. Control Centre Development
- Engineering Manager with responsibility for procurement of new systems to replace existing Signal Boxes and Electrical Control Rooms and augment management capability. Project Budget of £120m, managing staff complement of 12 employees/contractors.
- Led teams of contractors in definition of RAMS, functional and non-functional requirements and evaluation of response to OJEC Notices. Assisted in definition of Commercial Terms and development of Contracting Strategy.
- Specified and co-ordinated procurement of NMC Requirements Management System (chosen from CORE/CRADLE/DOORS and other products)
- Participated in Railtrack's IMFDS initiative with Zone Directors and Senior Management, developing a national business-led strategy for infrastructure control.
- Co-ordinated production of User Requirement Specification for Control Centre Systems: examined and obtained in-depth information on Traffic Management Systems in USA, Germany, Finland, Denmark and Holland to ascertain suitability to requirements.
- Managed production of Building Requirements Specifications for Control Centres including all aspects of security, layout, and applicable legislation and siting issues.
1994 - 1996: Railtrack West Coast Main Line - Infrastructure Planning
- Developed and implemented renewals programmes to maintain this important arterial route. Developed and supervised multi-user database in MS-Access on Novell Network.
- Part of Strategic Planning Group investigating optimum spend for limited renewals budgets.
- Designer and Custodian of Zone's Planning Database and it's administration
- Gained extensive knowledge of the WCML infrastructure.
1992 - 1994: Baker Hughes Inteq - Field Specialist
- Engineered horizontal gas wells in the Sole Pit area of the Southern North Sea for Shell (U.K) and Santa Fe Drilling (U.K.) under an incentive scheme, with the Drilling Contractor assuming responsibility for the Drilling process rather than the Operator. Typical wells budgeted at £5m, and supervised 20 staff.
- IT Skills used to improve and standardise reporting procedures offshore.
1994: Link Associates, Derby - Directing Staff
- Part-time member of Directing Staff at an International Crisis Management Centre, specialising in role-playing offshore oil and gas roles.
1980 - 1992: BW Mud Ltd - Field Engineer
- Initially assigned to U.K. Land Drilling Operations. Engineered wells in a variety of locations connected with the Oil and Gas Industry and for the National Coal Board.
- Following transfer to Offshore Operations, engineered wells on a number of Development and Exploration wells, many in difficult areas of the North Sea such as Block 30.
- Ran the company's Danish Base in Esbjerg during workover operations in the Dan Field.
1977 - 1979: Milchem Drilling Fluids, Libya - Technical Service Representative
- Began my career in the Oil Industry in Libya, where I received a good grounding in the running of drilling fluids in a difficult area.
