My name is Mark Barrett, I am currently a 2nd Dan in WTF Taekwondo with
the Heart Of England Taekwondo club. We train under Master Neil Guest, 5th Dan, in the
Coventry area. The club has been running since the early seventies, so we are fairly well
established in the area.

 | MASTER GUEST 5th Dan, my own instructor has his own site,
he has some videos of destruction techniques and competition scoring that are worth a
butcher's. Also class times and venues. neilguest@h-o-e-t-c.freeserve.co.uk

 | We perform WTF Taekwondo, but within the class I like to give my
students an all round Martial Arts education with the emphasis on personal safety. We have
a problem as instructors that students come to us and learn a particular style, become
reasonably proficient at it, then walk around outside the class thinking that they can
take on all-comers. Anybody who has trained for an extended period of time in the arts
will understand this is a dangerous position to put yourself in, and you are only heading
for a fall if you enter into combat outside the dojang. One of my favourite quotes (with
apologies to wizard Rincewind of the Unseen University) is "He who runs
away today, lives to run away another day!" . I tell my students that
their best defence is their legs, they should run away from confrontation and keep running
until the assailant is either lost, gives up, or falls down in an untidy heap. A footnote
to any instructors, this also means that you get to keep more students because they don't
get beaten up so often.

 | A bunch of my students, some wearing full contact body armour, not that
I would trust any of them to use it, I mean, look at that nutter on the end!

Me and a few friends at a seminar by Master Sang H Kim, a fantastic instructor and
inspirational teacher

This is me with my oldest son Robert, he's still only four but enjoys taking part in
the classes and demonstrations, I hope to get him into a full training regime when he is
old enough to appreciate the arts, but I don't want to be a pushy parent!
