A World of its own
2 March - 31 May 1998
The Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal has a
long and distinguished history covering more than fifteen
centuries. Although the country covers a large
mountainous area, the greater part of its artistic and
cultural heritage is centred in the Kathmandu Valley.
High mountains on all sides have fostered a strong sense
of cultural identity in Kathmandu, making it a place
where time-honoured customs, beliefs and practices are
preserved. The buildings of Kathmandu are also unique.
Many ancient monasteries, temples, rest houses and
places, richly ornamented with wood relief and other
sculptures are without parallel in Asia.
This exhibition, the British
Museums first devoted exclusively to Nepal,
explores the traditional art and life of the Kathmandu
Valley. Buddhist and Hindu sculptures from the
museums collection illustrate the history and
character of the religious tradition of Nepal while a
major attraction is a silver replica of the famous Krishna
Temple of Patan (Lalitpur). On loan from the Royal
Palace, Kathmandu, in celebration of Visit Nepal Year,
it depicts the unique architecture of medieval Nepal. Printed
manuscripts, among them a narrative scroll dating to
the 18th century, highlight the long standing vitality of
literary and artistic life in Kathmandu. The Oldfield
watercolours, borrowed from the British Library and
publicly exhibited here for the first time, provide
fascinating views of Kathmandu and neighbouring centres
in the valley before 20th century growth and
urbanisation.
His Majestys Government of Nepal,
in partnership with the private sector, is observing Visit
Nepal Year 1998. Year long events and festivities
manifesting the rich cultural heritage of Nepal are being
held throughout the country. To further encourage
visitors to Nepal in 1998, a special incentive package
for the purchase of goods and services in on offer.
Royalties for filming documentaries in Nepal are waived
for 1998 in order to encourage producers to film one of
the most scenic and culturally rich destinations in the
world.
