HM's Birthday Celebrations

To celebrate the auspicious 53rd birthday of His Majesty the King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, the Royal Nepalese Ambassador Dr. Singha Bahadur Basnyat and HRH Princess Jotshana Basnyat hosted a reception at the Royal Nepalese Embassy on 5th January 1998.

Similarly, the YETI, Nepalese Association also organised birthday celebration on 26th December 1996 at Hounslow, West London with various programmes.


Exhibition on Nepal

Royal Nepalese Ambassador to the United Kingdom Dr Singha Bahadur Basnyat addressed the 3rd annual meeting of the Britain-Nepal Chamber of Commerce held under the chairmanship of Sir John Nott at the Royal Nepalese Embassy in London recently.

The Royal Nepalese Ambassador gave details of the Visit Nepal ’98 project being worked out in conjunction with the British museum, Sir John Stanley and Royal Nepalese Embassy to stage a three month exhibition titled "Nepal - A world of Its Own" starting in March at the British museum.

On the occasion Colonel J. M. Evans, chairman of the Britain-Nepal Chamber of Commerce, summarised the events of last year and the plan for the next 12 months.


Twin city relations

The Nepal Kingdom Foundation, UK is organising twin city relations between Kathmandu City of Nepal and Reading City of UK. The Sagarmatha Times, UK Editor in Chief Mr B.P.Joshi and NKF member Mr Kiran Das Shrestha met the Mayor of Kathmandu with the proposal letter of NKF. They have already finished initial stage of meetings on establishing twin-city relations between the two cities.


Yeti Referendum

As per the latest news received from our correspondent in Manchester, Yeti Nepalese Association, Midlands and North UK recently held a referendum as to whether or not to become a fully independent Nepalese Association in UK.

The outcome of the referendum was 94 percent of grassroot members voted for the association to become a fully independent organisation.

With this majority, the Executive Committee agreed to respect and honour the mandates of the grassroots members of the assocation and Yeti Nepalese Association, Midlands and North UK has now become a fully independant organisation.


Activities of Yeti-Midlands and North UK

As per communiqué received from Manchester, following are their activities :

Nepal Himalayan Festival : Yeti Midlands and North are currently preparing for the second Nepal Himalayan Festival which is to be held in Manchester on May 1998. With the aim of exposing Nepal, its culture and history to the outside world, Yeti have managed to involve the Manchester City council as well as the Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to conquer Mt. Everest.

Mr Madhav Sharma : The members of Yeti welcomes, appreciated and congratulated Mr Madhav Sharma who was in UK on his venture for world tour on a motorbike. Mr Sharma was presented with £352.30 as a financial assistance for his venture.

Meeting : With the intention of making Yeti achieve more of its goals in 1998 and to improve the good relation of the association, a special committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Dr Bhaskar Sharma


Nepal Kingdom Foundation Activities :

As per communiqué received from Nepal Kingdom Foundation, following are their activities :

HMG’s birthday : A special prayers was offered by Lama Rimpoche on the occasion of HM the King’s birthday on 28th December 1997. The prayers wished for the long life and prosperity of the King.

‘Nepal Rediscovered’ : NKF is currently holding a ‘Nepal Rediscovered’ photograph exhibition from the NKF archive at Nepal House, Reading. The photo exhibition is open to the general public. As a complimentary gesture, NKF Chairman, Mr Padma Prakash Shrestha submitted to HRH The Prince of Wales a photograph of King Edward VII with Jang Bahadur Rana in the 1870’s for presentation to the Nepal National Museum on his official visit to Nepal.


Next stage of World Tour

A 24 year old Nepali youth who set off from Nepal on a venture of doing a world tour on his 125 CC motorbike and also to promote Nepal to the outside world during his venture, set off for the next stage of his venture when he left London on 18th January with Belgium as his next destination. According to information, he will then tour Netherlands, the rest of the European countries before travelling to America.

Mr Sharma had arrived in London on November 31 and departed from the Royal Nepalese Embassy, where he was bidded Bon Voyage by officials from the Embassy along with a small crowd that had gathered to greeet him as he set off for the next stage of his tour.
