K A T H M A N D U

Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal. It is situated at an altitude of 1350 meter. The valley in which the city is located is surrounded by green mountains, shrines, temples, palaces, squares, ageless sculptures and legends that are part of every brick and stone and gilded masterpiece make a living museum of Kathmandu city. "There are as many temples as there are houses and as many

idols as inhabitants here, not being a fountain or river or a hill, within its limits that is not consecrated to one or the other of the Hindu or Buddhist deities". Wrote a foreigner a long-time ago.

History :
The city of Kathmandu was built by King Gun Kamdev in 723 AD It is widely believed that Kathmandu was a big lake and was made habitable when Manjushree cut the hill open at Chovar to drain out the water. Kathmandu is one of the three historical cities of Kathmandu valley, the other two being, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur. Kathmandu is named after "Kastha-Mandap" meaning the temple made of wood in Sanskrit, art imposing Pagoda near Hanuman Dhoka Palace. It was built in 1596 out of a single tree.

Climate :
It has a pleasant sub-tropical cool climate. Summer (June-August) is warm to hot (max 31 C) with lots of rainfall, Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September- November) is warm during the day and cool in the night. Winter (December-February) is cold with minimum temperature of about 0 C but mostly sunny during the days. The annual rainfall is about 1300 mm.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. Visa can be obtained from the Royal Nepalese Embassy, Mon-Fri 1000-1200 hrs. Visas can also be obtained on arrival in Kathmandu at Tribhuvan International Airport.

2.Once the Visa is granted it has to be used within six months from the date of issue. It is valid for 30 days for single entry & double entry and 60 days for multiple entry, from the date of entry into Nepal.

3.Once the visa is issued it cannot be amended or revalidated. Visa fees are 20 pound per person for single entry for 30 days and 30 pound per person for double entry for 30 days and 45 pound per person for multiple entry for 60 days. Minimum time required for processing visa is 24 hrs. Application by post takes two to three weeks.

4. One passport size photo required along with visa form.

5. Personal cheques and credit cards are not accepted, only British Postal Order/Sterling Pound Draft and S.A.E for U.K. and International coupon for other countries for return of passport(s).
