| The Kalapani Issue
The Mahakali river is on the western boundary between
Nepal and India. That is acknowledged by both the parties as per the Sugaili agreement of
1816. And is also accepted by the international community. The eastern portion of land
belongs to Nepal and the western portion of land belongs to India. We have had no problem
on that issue in the past. Mr Pranab Mukherjee, the then Foreign Minister of India issued
a joint statement when he paid a official visit of Nepal last year.
The Kalapani is a place also known as Tinker, it is
situated in this region on the Nepal side. From the strategic point of view of India to
China, this particular place is very important. In 1962 India opened its Army barrack in
Kalapani to keep their eye on China. The Panchayat government of that time knew about all
these things, but acted ignorant to please India. Because Nepal had recently murdered the
Democracy in Nepal and all democratic forces were refused into India to retaliate in Nepal
for reinstate of Democracy. Then Panchayat government thought that by doing this favour to
India Nepal could seek their help to control Nepalese democratic activists from India.
There used to be a big rock near the Kalapani in
Mahakali river. The rock was destroyed by India. With the destruction of that big rock the
area took the shape of rivulet, it is now called Pankha Khola. India is saying that Pankha
Khola is the boundary. Kaalaapaani is situated in between the Pankha Khola and Mahakali
River. In this manner, India is now saying that Kalapani is in India and not in Nepal. The
controversial statement issued by Indian Ambassador to Nepal K V Rajan was objected by
Nepalese Foreign Ministry and follow patriot Nepalese. The long march of Nepalese students
to Kalapani is one of the milestone of Nepalese nationals to express their resentment
towards India.
India is a big nation in the sub- continent. The past and present proves
that she has sour relations with her neighbours because of her interference nature
politically and economically. More or less Nepal has had fair relations with India. But
India is always trying to cheat Nepal from her rights and justice. Kalapani is in Nepal
and India should immediately pull out her Army Barrack from Nepalese soil as a gesture of
good neighbours. India should also honour the international boundary line and accept the
sovereignty of Nepal and its land. Otherwise India should be prepared for another bad name
for itself in the International community.
