The river Ore is separated from the sea by a spit of shingle ten miles long. In this photo our club Wayfarers are entering the river passing the extreme endpoint of this shingle spit to starboard. To the right of the picture on the mainland shore is Shingle Street, a hamlet including a row of coastgaurd cottages and a few other houses. The tide in the lower reaches of the Ore is one of the fastest tidal streams in the UK and it is often not possible to enter the river against it
