1. Introduction to sapere aude

Enlightenment is Man's emergence from self-imposed tutelage, that is to say, from the inability to use the intellect without guidance by another. It is self-imposed if its cause does not lie in a deficiency of the intellect but of the courage and determination to use it autonomously. Sapere aude! Have the courage to think! is therefore the motto of the Enlightenment. (I. Kant, Was ist Aufklärung?)
Developments in mathematics and physics that culminated in Einstein's so-called theories of relativity have turned the "hard" natural sciences into a paradise for obscurantists. My focus is on special relativity (SR) - the foundation for general relativity (GR) - because the regression to shoddy logic and the recourse to grotesquely fallacious mathematical deductions can here most easily be seen. For a brief discussion of this topic go to my page2.

Academic physics would have us believe that substantive objections to special relativity (SR) are non-existent; in refutation of this claim I list here information about critics (websites, references); for specific objections go to page3. Unfortunately, critics exhibit the same weakness of thought as defenders of SR, in that they fail to recognise the mathematical root of problems introduced by SR into the foundations of physics. Across the board, objections thus battle with phantoms and focus on terms read out of context. However, my lists are tolerant, because the courage and honest labours of critics are to be applauded.

2. Aids to communication

2.1. Associations, directories, institutes etc. (A-Z):

Directory of dissident physicists and their beliefs, ed. Dr. J.P. Wesley, Weiherdammstr. 24, 78176 Blumberg, Germany

International Scientific Conference "Space, Time, Gravitation"

Natural Philosophy Alliance, founded 1994.

Research Group "Geometry and Physics" (Director: Prof. Umberto Bartocci), Department of Mathematics, University of Perugia, Via Vanvitelli 1, 06100 Perugia, Italy; http://www.cartesio-episteme.net/
Comment: Prof. Bartocci's Institute is here listed to indicate the participation of mathematical experts in the anti-relativity movement. But typically, Professor Bartocci pays no attention to the vital 4D/3D difference, and therefore would have us believe that "from a mathematical (and therefore theoretical) sense, special relativity is completely consistent and correct"; see http://www.cartesio-episteme.net/quest.htm

Society for the Advancement of Physics (Director: Dr. George Galeczki), R.S. Flittarder Hauptstrasse 22, D-51061 Cologne, Germany

2.2. A small selection of books by critics:

For an exhaustive documentation of books and papers critical of SR see the German GOM Project Relativity - 95 YEARS OF CRITICISM OF THE SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY (1908-2003), in particular

  • Kap.4 (Annotated bibliography of critical publications: books and papers; 2221 KB)
  • Kap.5 (Books; 734KB). Here are some books not listed in the GOM bibliography:

A note here on the Special Relativity Letter (1997-1999; copies no longer available). This had been set up to encourage discussion (among friends) about "critical" objections. As it turned out, the understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures in their historical context, a prerequisite for critical enquiry into SR, was insufficient. Most participants have published elsewhere.
In the A-Z list of critics of foundations I refer to lists of typical titles (books, articles, conference papers); because of its size my references to the GOM Project are highly selective. The email correspondence published by Prof. Bartocci is also of interest. References in the A-Z below are as follows:

    2.3. Critics A-Z

Any such list must have two aims: In view of their large number (the GOM bibliography - by no means complete - names ca. 1350 authors) I include here only those critics who have published (or participated in events such as conferences) since 1970, or where GOM-Kap.4 contains information about their arguments (summaries, quotations, reviews, comments).
Please send corrections, and any information you wish to be included, to sapere.aude@btinternet.com.

Comment: The only critic, to my knowledge, to point out that, if the transformation maths is invalid, SR has no foundation whatsoever. Unfortunately, B. ignores that the crucial equations are not conventional "algebra" but analytic descriptions of a geometric figure (analytic geometry; t and t' not coordinate variables but auxiliaries). B.'s objection to the (non-existent!) t'-function therefore misses the point. (Both points, in fact: why the transformation of SR physics is alarmingly false, and why the traditional trust in the constructs of professional mathematicians has been an unprecedented disaster, at least for physics.)

Comment by G. Walton: Ch. was popular in some quarters because of his passionate appeal for a return to supposedly "common sense" notions (e.g., absolute simultaneity; rejection of space curvature), an appeal that reveals a grotesque ignorance of the concepts and metaphors of measurement and quantification. I have been thrown out of the NPA because of my protests that arguments of this kind bring the entire community of critics into disrepute.

Comment: Prof. Chiao's group, like that of Prof. Nimtz in Cologne, Germany, is widely believed to have refuted the TR assumption of c as a limiting speed and universal constant. This belief, like the establishment interpretation of TR, ignores that c, both as a limiting speed and a constant, presupposes a relativistic metric. The experiments in question involve successions of Riemann spaces the metric of which, even in an ideal case, is completely unknown. These efforts demonstrate the catastrophic failure in our understanding of the meaning of quantitative procedures of which the alternative measurement specifications of TR are only a particularly risible example.

Comment: K.'s discussion is arguably the worst: verbose beyond measure, endlessly repetitive - an insult to the common intelligence which K. purports to defend. No attempt has been made to verify the meaning of basic quantitative terms and symbolic expressions (e.g. of analytic geometry, THE traditional language of classical mathematical physics including classical mechanics).

Comment: The webpage mentions the major paper where Dr. M. erects and refutes from experimental data the strawman according to which the space-time transform of SR presumes the velocity vector to be c in all systems of reference. In view of the abysmal poverty of SR logic one despairs at such 'refutations' coming from the highest academic quarters; a typical waste of critical effort, intimidating by its very learnedness. The defining equations of SR, in the symbolism customary before the adoption of vector algebra, involve the scalar norms |ct|, |ct'| only; as is evident from the figurative representation denoted by these equations, the corresponding displacement vectors differ in magnitude and, unless y, z, = 0, direction. If t, t' are scalar, it is clear that, in itself, the quantity c cannot denote a vector. The mathematical obsession with 4D obscures that a transform of this kind corresponds to a change of the unit vector, say r0 and r'0, which must therefore be rendered explicit. The derivatives, moreover, whether scalar, namely c, or vector, namely cr0 and cr'0, depend on the basis, namely t or t'. Depending on the choice of basis, one and the same quantity c refers therefore to different speeds or velocities.

Comment: Few critics (if any) question the mathematical foundation of SR. Neil Munch, because of his indefatigable efforts, has therefore come to be regarded as the specialist to whom such questions may safely be delegated. But any such query presupposes insight into the concepts and methods of the foundations of mathematics (e.g. n-D mathematical space with its representations and constituents, kinds of variable and their roles, types of algebra which in the SR transformation have been muddled up). Instead, M. takes recourse to tortuously circular operations, involving fictitious elements 'seen'. In addition, he argues from the notion that the Lorentz factor g refers to the ratio between different displacements; it denotes, of course, the paradoxically reciprocal ratio between the respective symbolic representations of identical displacements.
