Enlightenment is Man's emergence from self-imposed tutelage, that is to say, from the inability to use the intellect without guidance by another. It is self-imposed if its cause does not lie in a deficiency of the intellect but of the courage and determination to use it autonomously. Sapere aude! Have the courage to think! is therefore the motto of the Enlightenment. (I. Kant, Was ist Aufklärung?)Developments in physics have persuaded a gullible public that scientific insight transcends the confines of conventional reason; critics are a target for ridicule and abuse. sapere aude honours those qualified professionals who seek to reclaim the common sense foundations of knowledge, and tries to facilitate access to their work.
In popular philosophy, physical theory has filled the conceptual void created by the decline of religion; to its believers, it delivers both meaning and mystery. Unfortunately, lay interpretations ignore the fundamental role of mathematics, and of metaphor in textual presentation. The critical debate among scientists demonstrates that unresolved difficulties exist in regard of the concepts, referents and methods of mathematics in just those areas where thought is believed to have broken through some supposed barrier to insight.
Philosophy must bear much of the blame for the loss of vital cognitive capacities. In its own sphere, it has long recognized that formal logic is of no help with actual logical problems; formal logic merely continues as a speciality. Yet philosophers specializing in the foundations of mathematics continue to lead in the relentless regression to logicism, a development of which participating mathematicians are unlikely to recognize the philosophical import. It is these developments which are responsible for the wholesale dismissal of just those parts of mathematics that are essential for empiricist cognition (most particularly, geometry as visual logic, but also more generally the mathematics of quantity). My focus is on Special Relativity (SR), not as a physical theory, but because of its relevance in our evaluation of the supposed triumph of counter-intuitive mathematics. (As a physical theory, SR is a mere mathematical chimera, a mathematical phantom; the physics of SR does not exist.) The obsession with abstraction has led mathematicians to neglect the distinction between the formalisms of different branches of mathematics; for a brief discussion go to my page2; I include there also an item on Cantor's diagonal, a particularly absurd instance of the fallaciousness of abstract procedure. Einstein, not a particularly critical thinker, is a victim of mathematical developments much as those physicists who try defend his theory on mathematical grounds, or those critics who, unacquainted with the historical and philosophical background, fail to recognize the roots and implications of the contradictions in Einstein's mathematical arguments; for a brief discussion of critics' objections to SR mathematics go to page3. If we fall into mathematical traps at such an alarmingly elementary level, confidence in more demanding mathematical constructs (General Relativity, Quantum Physics and subsequent developments) is surely misplaced.
Academic physics would have us believe that substantive objections to SR are non-existent; in refutation of this claim I list here information about critics (websites, publications). Unfortunately, inattentive to the mathematical root of problems, critical objections tend to battle with phantoms and to focus on terms read out of context. However, my lists are tolerant, because the courage and honest labours of critics are to be applauded.

Research Group "Geometry and Physics" (Director: Prof. Umberto Bartocci), Department of Mathematics, University of Perugia, Via Vanvitelli 1, 06100 Perugia, Italy; http://www.cartesio-episteme.net/
Founded 1994 as a meeting place for critics of orthodoxy in the foundations of physics, especially of special relativity (SR) as evidence of foundational crisis. More recently, the emphasis has shifted to alternative theory.
Opponents of orthodoxy encounter isolation and rejection; the NPA deserves our gratitude for providing excellent means of communication and support.
Of immense value is the hosting of increasing numbers of critical papers; in the past, one had to rely on mere assertions that something or other had been proven of finally refuted. (See my page3 for supposed refutations of the LT; we should be aware of the danger of an overconfident consensus based on ignorance.)
Virtually all critics listed below have entries in the NPA database; to save space I do no longer include links.
For Prof. Bartocci's erudite e-journal Episteme (2000-2004) go to http://itis.volta.alessandria.it/episteme/. (The Episteme-site is often unavailable for long periods, but has tended eventually to turn up again.)
Comment: Prof. Bartocci's Institute
For an exhaustive documentation of books and papers critical of SR (unfortunately, apparently, restricted to publications 2004 and earlier) see the German GOM Project Relativity - 95 YEARS OF CRITICISM OF THE SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY (1908-2003), in particular
A note here on the Special Relativity Letter (1997-1999; copies no longer available). This had been set up to encourage discussion (among friends) about "critical" objections. As it turned out, the understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures in their historical context, a prerequisite for critical enquiry into SR, was insufficient. Most participants have published elsewhere.
In the A-Z list of critics of foundations I refer to lists of typical titles (books, articles, conference papers); because of its size my references to the GOM Project are highly selective. The email correspondence published by Prof. Bartocci is also of interest.
References in the A-Z below are as follows:
In view of their large number (the GOM bibliography - by no means complete - names ca. 1350 authors) I include here only those critics who have published (or participated in events such as conferences) since 1970, or where GOM-Kap.4 contains information about their arguments (summaries, quotations, reviews, comments).

Comment: K.'s discussion is arguably the worst: verbose beyond measure, endlessly repetitive - an insult to the common intelligence which K. purports to defend. No attempt has been made to verify the meaning of basic quantitative terms and symbolic expressions (e.g. of analytic geometry, THE traditional language of classical mathematical physics including classical mechanics).Kulba, Leslee A., Farmington Hills, MI 48336, USA

Comment: The webpage mentions the major paper where Dr. M. erects and refutes from experimental data the strawman according to which the space-time transform of SR presumes the velocity vector to be c in all systems of reference. In view of the abysmal poverty of SR logic one despairs at such 'refutations' coming from the highest academic quarters; a typical waste of critical effort, intimidating by its very learnedness. The defining equations of SR, in the symbolism customary before the adoption of vector algebra, involve the scalar norms |ct|, |ct'| only; as is evident from the figurative representation denoted by these equations, the corresponding displacement vectors differ in magnitude and, unless y, z, = 0, direction. If t, t' are scalar, it is clear that, in itself, the quantity c cannot denote a vector. The mathematical obsession with 4D obscures that a transform of this kind corresponds to a change of the unit vector, say r0 and r'0, which must therefore be rendered explicit. The derivatives, moreover, whether scalar, namely c, or vector, namely cr0 and cr'0, depend on the basis, namely t or t'. Depending on the choice of basis, one and the same quantity c refers therefore to different speeds or velocities.

(Comment: I had previously excluded W. in consequence of misinformation typical of web-generated illiteracy, e.g. Google search and the Google book digitilization: snippets presented out of context, such that protesters are shown up as supporters of that against which they are protesting. The apparently objectionable reference by W. to "jüdisch orientierte Münchner Physiker" actually occurs in his 1935 letter to Sommerfeld, alerting S. to that expression used in the notorious Völkischer Beobachter. On W.'s career, pre- and post-1945, see Wikipedia, and the link there to Briefe in the German Nationalarchiv.)
