Art Museum
This new online art
museum opened with Van Gogh's Van Goghs: Masterpieces from the Van Gogh
Museum, Amsterdam. As well as the paintings, the exhibition includes
letters which Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about specific paintings
and other links which reveal much about his life. The site is soon to
launch another major exhibition: Part 1 of The American Century, Art and
Culture 1900-2000, and will also add art news and information services
Art of the
First World War
Commemorating the 80th
anniversary of the 1918 Armistice, this beautiful website avoids
reviewing the facts of the war but highlights its horrors. The
informative foreword leads on to galleries containing 110 paintings,
each with excellent commentary.

Festivals Association
Your A-Z online guide to
British Arts Festivals throughout the year. This is a bright and
colourful site, with clear and easily accessible navigation. Each
festival page has a short explanation paragraph complete with location
details and website address if applicable. There's a related links page

New exhibitions and
artists currently on show in contemporary art galleries in London and
the regions, the Channel Islands, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are listed

Cornucopia
Comprehensive information
on the 50 museums in England with designated collections (that is,
pre-eminent collections outside the national museums) is provided in
this new project from the Museums and Galleries Commission. The full
Cornucopia will go online in 2000 and will cover the collections of all
1,700 MGC registered museums in the UK. Users will be able to explore
many types and sizes of museums and discover which museums have
collections which can help with research, studies or school projects.

England. There's regional information on places to visit, things to buy
and details of conservation projects.

The world-famous Parisian
centre for 20th-century art, architecture and design has a slick,
contemporary-looking site. Special sections offer some good image
reproduction and background information. There's also a gallery plan,
location details, opening times, an online public information library, a

Guggenheim Museums
The first Guggenheim
Museum of Modern Art was established 60 years ago in New York. There are
now five museums including three in Europe; the most recent additions
being in Berlin and Bilbao. At this tastefully designed site, you can
find out what exhibitions and programmes are on at each museum.

lists current exhibitions and events at the Hayward Gallery in London
and those touring round the country.
Hermitage Museum
Over 2,000 masterpieces
are displayed on this state-of-the art website which allows you to zoom
in on images for closer detail and conduct searches by subject, area of

Hunterian Museum & Gallery, Glasgow
The Hunterian offers a
virtual tour of its art and coin collections, an online Whistler
exhibition and a visit to Charles Rennie Makintosh's house.
Islamic and Arabic Arts and
Architecture
From Mesopotamian coins
to Moorish palaces, this educational website offers a fascinating
introduction to the Muslim world. It's run by a non-profit organisation

for its electronic visitors. Viewable in English, it gives a

expect, there are many images, which can take time to download, but it's
worth the wait.

National Museum of
Photography, Film and Television
Based in Bradford, this
national museum is due to reopen in spring 1999, telling the story of
photography, film and television in the digital age. Until then its
Cinema Pictureville is showing films and staging exhibitions at the

National Portrait Gallery
A basic information
service for the home of nearly 10,000 artistic works, all of which are
catalogued here in the index section. Although it can be slow to
download at times and is artistically unimaginative, it does have useful
information, including a floor plan, a chronological list of all the
different galleries, admission prices and forthcoming events.

this is a fascinating website and the gallery of his works is a true

The new round-the-clock
gateway website offers internet users access to the resources of all
museums and galleries in the UK. In the first stage, there is a register
of museums which can be searched regionally, by town, by postcode and by
collections. In time, it will offer a magazine, resource packs and
trails, a gazetteer, and a scrapbook where visitors can keep their own
material.
