Museum of London
The London Museum's galleries use artefacts and images to display London's rich and diverse history and their site gives a taster of the real experience of a visit with its virtual tour of some of the exhibits. There's information about the many galleries, the admission fees, an events diary, and a list of services, including its well-stocked bookshop and an email service.

The Victoria and Albert Museum
If you can't visit the museum in person, why not sample the inspirational alternative of an online exhibition? The V & A is planning to make its site a fully interactive experience and already there are a couple of small exhibitions as a taster. Home to 145 galleries, this site successfully informs, guides and educates.

Web Gallery of Art

This is an exceptional educational resource for the enquiring art student. The home page categorises the different eras in history from prehistoric to modern, creating a comprehensive timeline. Each link from here will take you to a vast collection of the best sites on the web. A definite bookmark for anyone interested in the history of art.

Art Museum
This new online art museum opened with Van Gogh's Van Goghs: Masterpieces from the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. As well as the paintings, the exhibition includes letters which Vincent wrote to his brother Theo about specific paintings and other links which reveal much about his life. The site is soon to launch another major exhibition: Part 1 of The American Century, Art and Culture 1900-2000, and will also add art news and information services

Art of the First World War
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the 1918 Armistice, this beautiful website avoids reviewing the facts of the war but highlights its horrors. The informative foreword leads on to galleries containing 110 paintings, each with excellent commentary.

The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology
The world-famous home of some fascinating and internationally unique art collections has designed a site with its own virtual tour. There's also a news page, a comments box and information on the education programmes, exhibitions and lectures the museum organises.
A superb site for an outstanding museum.

British Arts Festivals Association
Your A-Z online guide to British Arts Festivals throughout the year. This is a bright and colourful site, with clear and easily accessible navigation. Each festival page has a short explanation paragraph complete with location details and website address if applicable. There's a related links page and an image map for a general overview.

Contemporary Art Exhibitions
New exhibitions and artists currently on show in contemporary art galleries in London and the regions, the Channel Islands, Scotland, Ireland and Wales are listed here and can be searched alphabetically.

Cornucopia
Comprehensive information on the 50 museums in England with designated collections (that is, pre-eminent collections outside the national museums) is provided in this new project from the Museums and Galleries Commission. The full Cornucopia will go online in 2000 and will cover the collections of all 1,700 MGC registered museums in the UK. Users will be able to explore many types and sizes of museums and discover which museums have collections which can help with research, studies or school projects.

English Heritage
This is a well laid-out site from the national body charged with the protection of historic England. There's regional information on places to visit, things to buy and details of conservation projects.

Georges Pompidou Centre
The world-famous Parisian centre for 20th-century art, architecture and design has a slick, contemporary-looking site. Special sections offer some good image reproduction and background information. There's also a gallery plan, location details, opening times, an online public information library, a kids' page and some good links to other modern and contemporary art sites.

Los Angeles - 'Explore Art' gives on-line access to the museum's collections and exhibitions

Guggenheim Museums
The first Guggenheim Museum of Modern Art was established 60 years ago in New York. There are now five museums including three in Europe; the most recent additions being in Berlin and Bilbao. At this tastefully designed site, you can find out what exhibitions and programmes are on at each museum.

Hayward Gallery, London
This attractive website lists current exhibitions and events at the Hayward Gallery in London and those touring round the country.

Hermitage Museum
Over 2,000 masterpieces are displayed on this state-of-the art website which allows you to zoom in on images for closer detail and conduct searches by subject, area of origin and genre.

The Hunterian Museum & Gallery, Glasgow
The Hunterian offers a virtual tour of its art and coin collections, an online Whistler exhibition and a visit to Charles Rennie Makintosh's house.

Islamic and Arabic Arts and Architecture
From Mesopotamian coins to Moorish palaces, this educational website offers a fascinating introduction to the Muslim world. It's run by a non-profit organisation and marries beautiful images with an explanation of their cultural significance. Highlights include the oriental rugs and calligraphy.

The Louvre
France's world-famous art gallery and museum has gone for a clear, informative and navigable site for its electronic visitors. Viewable in English, it gives a comprehensive brief on opening times, exhibitions, and ticket prices, as well as providing a thorough background to its own history. As you would expect, there are many images, which can take time to download, but it's worth the wait.

London's most famous tourist attraction has come to life. See your favourite celebrity waxworks at this amazing day out in London.

Monet in the 20th Century
Here's your chance to go on a virtual Monet tour, courtesy of Boston's Museum of Fine Art. As well as the paintings themselves, there's a light-hearted tour of the artist's life. Of course nothing can compete with seeing the canvases in person, but at least there are no heads here to get in the way of your view.

The Museum of Costume
Journey through the fashion ages, starting from 1660, at this site with its own online tour. Find out about the research centre's work and discover the extensive reference library, with its many fashion-related books dating back to the medieval period. There's also information for teachers about education programmes, including details on Bath's other museums.

Museum of Modern Art, New York
Set off on an art safari for families, sample the museum's online projects or visit their wonderful collection in this impressive website.

National Gallery, London
The National Gallery houses the national collection of western European art, spanning a period from about 1260 to 1900. Their website includes a listing of current exhibitions and events and a tour round the collection.

National Gallery in Ireland
A well designed site listing current exhibitions and events at the National Gallery in Dublin. It is also possible to visit the collection of paintings, sculpture, objets d'art and works on paper.

The National Trust
An attractive site with details on how to join the National Trust, places to visit, things to buy, news and events. There's also a great site for kids.

National Gallery of Art
This impressive Washington collection houses everything from Byzantine altarpieces to modern graphic design and you're free to browse at any time of day.

National Maritime Museum
As we gear up for the millennium, the world-famous Greenwich museum has a busy time ahead. The countdown clock is ticking and plans are afoot to mark this historic occasion with specially organised exhibitions and events. Find out the full agenda at this splendid site, which also includes some excellent fact files, features on their education services, and feedback and enquiry sections. This is beautifully designed and a joy to navigate.

National Museum of Photography, Film and Television
Based in Bradford, this national museum is due to reopen in spring 1999, telling the story of photography, film and television in the digital age. Until then its Cinema Pictureville is showing films and staging exhibitions at the Museum of Exile. There's a search facility, museum history and a latest news section.

National Museums and Galleries of Wales
All aspects of Welsh life are represented here with eight museums and galleries. This is an intelligently displayed site, which is available in both Welsh and English. You can email them for more information on specific topics, plus there's an events calendar and details about their education programmes.

National Museums and Galleries on Merseyside
An excellent no-fuss site to guide you through some of the many attractions on Merseyside, including the Liverpool Museum and the Walker Art Gallery. There's an events page and location maps.

National Museums of Scotland
For a potted guide to 3,000 years of Scottish history, this is a very good resource. There are direct links to a range of Scottish museums covering aviation, period costumes, natural history and the new Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh which officially opened on St Andrew's Day 1998. Easy to navigate and full of information, this site offers a thorough and comprehensive information service.

National Portrait Gallery
A basic information service for the home of nearly 10,000 artistic works, all of which are catalogued here in the index section. Although it can be slow to download at times and is artistically unimaginative, it does have useful information, including a floor plan, a chronological list of all the different galleries, admission prices and forthcoming events.

Natural History Museum
The Natural History Museum is an international leader in the scientific study of the natural world. Our science describes the present diversity of nature, promotes understanding of the critical importance of its past, and develops knowledge that supports anticipation and management of the impact of human activity on the environment.

On-line Picasso Project
This comprehensive site provides a detailed biography and chronological art gallery for every year of Picasso's life from 1881 to 1973. In addition, you'll find further links to information on cubism, reviews of the great artist from around the world, plus a selection of other masters including Cézanne, Dégas, Matisse, Rembrandt and Vermeer. Navigation could be improved, but this is a fascinating website and the gallery of his works is a true online treasure.

Tate Gallery
The national collection of 20th-century art is held at the Tate Gallery, as is the national collection of British Art. This is an extremely good site, clearly laid out and easy to navigate. Choose London, Liverpool or St Ives for details of each of the galleries, including exhibitions and events, or browse the collection.

William Morris Gallery
This website includes an online exhibition, links to other sites of interest, and even some William Morris designs for you to use as desktop wallpaper on your PC.

24 Hour Museum
The new round-the-clock gateway website offers internet users access to the resources of all museums and galleries in the UK. In the first stage, there is a register of museums which can be searched regionally, by town, by postcode and by collections. In time, it will offer a magazine, resource packs and trails, a gazetteer, and a scrapbook where visitors can keep their own material.
