There are no times when two planets are not related in some way. They are all in the solar system together; they are all part of the whole planetary pattern. Two planets are therefore always in some phase of cyclic relationship with one another. They become in particularly significant relationship when their angular distance from one another measures to certain values. The word aspect is from the Latin aspicere, aspectum, to look at. Astrological aspects are the angles between two planets (or other portant points) in the circle of the zodiac. They show the different ways in which energies relate or ~look at each other~.

We could think of the Zodiac as a musical octave with the signs being the sequence of notes. An aspect is the interval between the pitches of two planets (or other important points) on the zodiac scale.

The combination of the musical notes of all the planets and other important points is ones horoscope, a cosmic chord, the imprint one receives from the music of the spheres at the time of ones birth. Astrology has harmonious and dissonant aspects like the harmonious and dissonant note combinations in music. It is easier to work with harmonious aspects. But beautiful, meaningful music can be made on discordant notes. One can create a meaningful and beautiful life whatever the chord one has to work with. This is done by tuning into the higher harmonics of the aspects.

One transforms the dynamics of ones horoscope chart just as one does the zodiac signs and planets. One doesn’t have to know just which aspects are working badly for one. However, the birth horoscope shows the strongest aspects in ones particular pattern and therefore what might be especially worthwhile to focus on.

The ancients simplistically divided aspects into ~bad~ ones ad good ones. They considered the 2-series bad or ~malefic~ becausee these aspects challenge one to resolve quite different energy flows.

Modern astrologers are increasingly understanding that 2-series aspects signifiy important good potentials of the horoscope not associated with the traditional good aspects (the 3-series).

Planets that connect with 2-series aspects have a dynamic relationship to each other. They develop consciousness of the different qualities of their energies, a creative tension that is resolved by different qualities of their energies, by action and manifestation.

Opposition

Two points opposite each other in the zodiac form an opposition. They relate as a polarity, balancing each other and interacting directly.
