SEng and Railway Preservation

Second Engineering is my vision for an organisation to hold my wagons and support the engineering operations of the Caledonian Railway (brechin) Ltd

I've been involved with railway preservation for 10 years during those years I have served as the operations Director of the Caledonian Railway and been trained as passenger train Guard.  Behind the scenes I have worked extensively on track renewal projects and wagon restoration.  I have also from time to time been called on to support Locomotive restoration projects on both steam and diesel locomotives.

Outside Railway Preservation:

I hold a First Class Master of Engineering Degree in Electronic and Electrical from the University of Dundee.  I am Member of the institute of electrical engineers and am working towards gaining Chartered Engineer Status.

I was one of the development team on the Ocular EExd Camera system which is used in the hazardous areas aboard offshore oil installations.  My role on this project was a combination of assistant project engineer and design engineer.  In the former I was responsible for managing some of the materials and manufacturing activities of the project and in the latter responsible for developing and documenting bespoke modifications and design improvements.

I have also worked installing distributed Satellite systems in communal properties and on installing, maintaining and commissioning CCTV systems. Work which involved the pulling and termination coaxial and other cable types.  The CCTV work also encompassed various remote monitoring equipment and software including the Neteye, ozvision, regard and video domain systems.  Clients included local government, public utilities, construction companies and quarries.

Other work I have been involved with has included design and supervision of the production of PCBs and the supervision of under graduate laboratory classes.

Project work on steerable CCTV camera systems has given me knowledge of camera control protocols, serial communications and image processing.  I also have a working knowledge of Visual Basic, C, C++ and MFC having written windows and dos based applications.  My programming knowledge was bolstered and enhanced by 4 weeks of Scottish enterprise funded industrial training which focused on the programming of Embedded systems including the use of RTOS.

Since October 2002 I have been employed by JARVIS Rail Projects Scotland as trainee Signalling Engineer.  To enable me to carry out my Duties I hold PTS AC/DC Competence.
