Hank released two solo albums for polydor in the early eighties, the first being "Words and music" in 1982, featuring the hit single "Don't talk". This was reissued (using different artwork) by PICKWICK in 199.

Don't talk/ Slow down/ Bad cop/ Tahlia take your time/ China town/ Captain Zlogg/ The trouble with me is you/ Oh Suzie/ Night nurse/ Go Jimmy/ Then I found love/ Life line

"All alone with friends" was issued in 1983. The beautiful title track was the album's only instrumental. Also on the album was the haunting "Hawk and the dove". Like its predecessor, it was reissued on CD with a new cover in 1991. Pickwick also changed the running order from that of the original LP

The hawk and the dove/ Just another heartbreak/ Invisible man/ Don't answer/ Rainy day goodbye/ Where do you go when you dream/ 99 days/ Leila (Danny's got a song)/ Stardom/ All alone with friends

After the Shadows stopped working together. Hank's first album of the nineties was "Into the light", issued in October 1992. The album included the duets "We are the champions" (with Brian May) and "Pipeline" (with Duane Eddy). The musicians included Mark Griffiths who played bass on the later Shadows albums. Warren Bennett provided keyboards and most of the arrangements. Brian Bennett was credited with co-producing the album but not the drumming. Brian and Warren also wrote the excellent title track

Another day in paradise/ Everybody wants to rule the world/ Sylvia/ Don't know much/ Road train/ Pipeline/ Sumiko/ Into the light/ (Everything I do) I do it for you/ Rikki don't lose that number/ Scirocco/ Jessica/ Moontalk/ Tailspin/ Steel wheel/ We are the champions

The follow up album "Heartbeat" in 1993 was also co-produced by Hank and Brian who is also credited for drums and percussion. As with the previous album, Warren provides the arrangements and Mark the bass. Hank's son Ben plays guitar on "Hot Rox" whilst daughter Tahlia adds backing vocals on "Space oddity" and "Cable Beach". Further vocal harmonies were provided by another promising singer named Cliff Richard. Mark Knopfler dueted with Hank on "Wonderful land"

Heartbeat/ Oxygene/ Mrs Robinson/ Space Oddity/ Achy breaky heart/ I will always love you/ The crying game/ Cable beach/ Wonderful land/ Hot rox/ Rocket man/ Take five/ Wichita lineman/ Live and let die/ Crying/ Limited slip

In 1994, Hank again teamed up with Brian, but this time for a UK tour. The backing band featured Ben Marvin and Warren Bennett (according to Hank, they were cheap labour). Mark Griffiths completed the line-up. To cash in on the tour and to catch some of the pre Christmas market, Polydor released the disappointing "Best of Hank Marvin and the Shadows" album containing mostly tracks from Hank's previous two albums and the 1989 re-recordings of the Shadows early hits.

This would have been a good opportunity to have provided the 1993 version of "Nivram" which has only been issued as a CD single and "Janine" which has never been released on LP or CD. It did have a nice cover but was poor value as a full price release.

Another day in paradise/ Every breath you take*/ Jessica/ The rise and fall of Flingel Bunt*/ Atlantis*/ I will always love you/ Foot tapper*/ Cavatina*/ Heartbeat/ Everything I do, I do it for you/ Riders in the sky '90*/ Dance on*/ Hot rox/ Sylvia/ Moonlight shadow/ Apache*/ Mrs Robinson/ Walking in the air*/ Lady in red*/ Don't cry for me Argentina*/ Guitar tango*/ Wonderful land*/ Kon-Tiki*/ FBI* (*=Shadows)

Much better value was the budget priced compilation "Handpicked" which was released in April 1995. Again. Polygram missed the chance to include "Janine" or the edited version of "We are the champions" but a good selection of tracks for those who hadn't bought Hank's last two albums which provided 11 of the 14 tracks.

Achy breaky heart/ Everybody wants to rule the world/ Tailspin/ Hot rox/ Space oddity/ Don't talk/ Limited slip/ Cable beach/ All alone with friends/ Road train/ Moontalk/ Captain Zlogg/ Scirocco/ Into the light

November 1995 saw the release of "Hank plays Cliff". Promised to be the first of five "Hank plays..." albums. Most of the recording was done in Australia although Mark Griffith's bass and Cliff's backing vocals were recorded in England and mixed in later. Some great arrangements from Warren and immaculate playing as usual from Hank produced a very pleasant easy to listen to album, but for me, some of the tracks lacked the excitement of the early Cliff & the Shads originals

Living doll/ Wired for sound/ When the girl in your arms is the girl in your heart/ Travellin' light/ The twelfth of never/ The young ones/ Carrie/ It's all in the game/ Move it/ The day I met Marie/ Devil woman/ The next time/ I could easily fall (in love with you)/ Summer holiday/ In the country/ we don't talk anymore

529 426-2

"Hank plays Holly", the second "Hank plays ... " album, was released in November 1996. In my opinion, this is a better collection than its predecessor. Warren is credited as arranger for 9 of the 17 tracks, with Mark Griffiths credited for 2.

As well as Ben and daughter Tahlia, Hank has enlisted another of his sons, Paul Marvin to play acoustic guitar on 3 of the tracks. A bonus is the live version of "Heartbeat" recorded during the 1995 tour which is used in preference to the studio version which has already been issued on the "Heartbeat" and "Best of" CDs.

Peggy Sue/ It's so easy/ Raining in my heart/ Oh boy!/ Peggy Sue got married/ Listen to me/ Wishing/ Well.. all right/ It doesn't matter any more/ That'll be the day/ Brown eyed handsome man/ Everyday/ Rave on/ True love ways/ Maybe baby/ Not fade away/ Heartbeat

533 713-2

To coincide with his 1997 tour, CD and video recordings from the 1995 tour were released in March under the title "Hank plays Live"

Live and let die/ Devil Woman/ Summer Holiday/ Foot tapper/ Living doll/ Pipeline/ Lucile/ Rip it up/ Blue suede shoes/ Sleepwalk/ Atlantis/ The savage/ The young ones/ Travellin' light/ Eleanor Rigby/ Guitar tango/ Hound dog/ Mystery train/ Wonderful land/ Cavatina/ The rise and fall of Flingel Bunt/ Apache/ Move it

The second CD release of 1997 was the customary "pre-Christmas" CD for November. It was entitled Hank Marvin and the Shadows play the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.Sadly, the title did not signify the longed for Shadows re-union. The disc was to include six tracks recorded by the Shadows from their 1980's albums.

Whole New World/ The Phantom of the Opera /Memory* /Tell me on a Sunday/ I know him so well*/ Starlight Express Suite / I'd be Surprisingly Good for You/ Don't Cry for me Argentina*/ Can you feel the love tonight/ Love Changes Everything*/ Oh What a Circus/ The Music of the Night*/ Take that Look off your face/ All I ask of You*/ Another Suitcase in Another Hall/ One Night in Bangkok-Variations(tracks marked * are Shadows tracks previously available on other CDs)

anotherside.jpg (7340 bytes)July 1998 saw Another Side of Hank Marvin, the budget priced Polygram compilation of Hank's two solo albums from 1983/84 WORDS AND MUSIC and ALL ALONE WITH FRIENDS. What makes this compilation special, however, is that it contains the hauntingly beautiful instrumental track JANINE which was the B-side of the single THE HAWK AND THE DOVE and the single version of The trouble with me is you with added female voices. This was the follow-up single to Hank’s vocal hit Don’t Talk. The single version differed from the album version, in that it had added female voices in the chorus after being specially remixed by Hank who feels that it is the better version. Like Janine, this version has never appeared on CD before. To make room for JANINE, the track BAD COP has had to be dropped to keep within the maximum running time of 78 minutes for a single CD.

Don't Talk/ Slow Down/ Janine/ Tahlia Take Your Time/ China Town/ Captain Zlogg/ The Trouble With Me Is You/ Oh Suzie/ Night Nurse/ Go Jimmy/ Then I Found Love/ Life Line/ Just Another Heartbreak/ The Hawk And The Dove/ Invisible Man/ Leila (Danny's Got A Song)/ Whee Do You Go When You Dream/ Don't Answer/ Stardom/ Rainy Day Goodbye/ 99 Days/ All Alone With Friends.
